Feature Request: Support for Cubical (Cube-Map) Panoramic Images and Pano Data in E57

Feature Request: Support for Cubical (Cube-Map) Panoramic Images and Pano Data in E57

ReCap Pro currently lacks support for cubical (cube-map) panoramic images, which is the standard image format used by Leica Cyclone and several other scanning platforms to generate panoramic views. This creates a significant workflow limitation, especially when sharing data with clients who rely on ReCap Pro or when reusing panoramic images outside the original software ecosystem.

I also want to highlight an important point communicated by Leica on September 1st:
“E57 unstructured (single cloud/separate setups) does contain waypoints and pano information. However, ReCap cannot read it due to a limitation in the ReCap SDK. This issue is not solely dependent on Leica, so we are unsure when or if it will be resolved.”

This means that even when pano data is correctly embedded according to the E57 specification, ReCap Pro is unable to utilize it. As a result, a large amount of useful metadata becomes inaccessible in Autodesk workflows.

We kindly request that Autodesk address these limitations by:

  • Adding support for cube-map panoramic images, or enabling automatic conversion to equirectangular panoramas; and

  • Updating the ReCap SDK so it can properly read and use pano and waypoint information from E57 unstructured files.

These enhancements would significantly improve interoperability, reduce manual conversion steps, and make ReCap Pro far more flexible in multi-vendor scanning workflows.

Fully supporting this request. This is important, and customers will absolutely expect Leica hardware and Autodesk software to work seamlessly together, as they are seen as top tier providers for 3D scanning hardware and software.

Hi @KetilEdvardsen @prnyACZ7T ,

Thank you for the requests and feedback.

We have E57 cube map support for ReCap Pro and true pano implementation for ReCapSDK in our roadmap.

Warmest Regards,

Rishov

Hi @KetilEdvardsen and @prnyACZ7T

Regarding the following request: Adding support for cube-map panoramic images, or enabling automatic conversion to equirectangular panoramas

We are currently working to convert cubemap to spherical map when importing e57 file.

May I know if you have any sample E57 files that you can share with us?

Regards,

Klarinda

Hi!

Here is test data from the Leica BLK2GO.
The data has been exported from Leica Cyclone 360.

The RCP file does not contain any panoramic images, but the E57 file does include them when I check in Cyclone 3DR.

As you know, importing into ReCap does not bring in the images 🙂

You can download it here.

Hi @KetilEdvardsen

Thank you so much for the dataset, I am able to download it.

Currently, in our prototype, we are able to map 1 point cloud to 1 cubemap (which is composed by 6 pinhole images). This will create a nice spherical imagery (RealView) for the scan.

But I noticed that in your e57 file, you have only 1 point cloud and 1932 pinhole images (322 cubemaps).

Is it possible for the Leica Cyclone to export 1 point cloud for each cubemap? So instead of 1 point cloud and 322 cubemaps, is it possible to export 322 point clouds and 322 cubemaps?

Thank you for your message – great to hear that you were able to download the dataset.

Regarding your question, I’m afraid I don’t have enough detailed knowledge about this specific export setup in Leica Cyclone to give you a reliable answer.

I recommend that you contact Lisandro Saizar, who works in support at Leica Geosystems. He has the right expertise in this area and can help you further with whether it is possible to export one point cloud per cubemap, and how this could be done.
