Workflow ReCap to CAD

Hi,

I know about the Scan-to-Mesh/Object Mesh possibilities of ReCap Pro, but I want to go from a LaserCloud to a 3D DWG file.

We need to have some 3D Faces, but because they are inclined, it is very difficult to draw them, so if we could convert them from a Recap Project that would be nice.

So in Recap Pro we should be able to create an OBJ or RCM file, but how can we convert that into a basic 3D DWG ?

Hi Patrick,

I guess your method depends on what you want to do with the model:

1. You could export an OBJ, like you say, and import it into AutoCAD using a third-party plug-in: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-2010-2011-2012/obj-import-plug-in/td-p/3153350

2. You can export an RCM file from Recap360, bring it into ReMake, and then export that into an FBX that AutoCAD can insert.

3. You can attach RCS and RCP files directly to your AutoCAD drawings using the POINTCLOUDATTACH command (or the Attach button on the Insert tab). This doesn't give you a mesh, per se, but allows you to work with the point cloud at its full resolution. You can view, crop, and snap to that point cloud.

Hope that helps.

We need to use the DWG in anther 3D tool that cannot reference Point Clouds but can use a DWG as a reference.

I will try the different routes and see what works best.

What other tool are you using? What kind of model content do you have in your DWG? It might make more sense to import the DWG and the OBJ/FBX/etc as separate models.

We have to re-model an existing concrete floor in Tekla and/or ArchiCAD. They cannot reference a lasercloud, they can only reference a 3D DWG or DGN.

the floor has different small, but meaningful inclinations to gutters. The idea is to re-model those faces in ReCap and then get them into a DWG.

Hmm, I don't know much about Tekla or ArchiCAD, but I assume that they can't manage a DWG that has an RCS or RCP attached to it. So, ya, an OBJ or FBX mesh is probably your best option.

Best,
