I am curious why Autodesk persists in making people upload images? My internet connection is slow and with limited data. This makes ReCap a pain for me - is there a reason why the entire process can't be done locally (i.e. on the local machine) instead of via the cloud?
Also - what if I am working on sensitive data, i.e. government/commercial/law enforcement data...it would be a breach of policy to upload the images!
Do you offer a stand-alone solution that does NOT require image upload? I have noted the laser scans are processed locally - why not give people doing image to 3D based work the same option?
cheers
You aren't just uploading data to some storage server on "the cloud". It's not being processed by the equivalent of a desktop computer on the other end. It's getting worked on by dozens, if not hundreds, of server-based processors simultaneously - far outside of what a desktop computer is capable of. While you can technically get some mondo-expensive desktops with quad 12-core Xeon processors the vast majority of users are working with single-processor quad- or hex-core systems. The same generally holds true for server capabilities - few businesses have the kind of server architecture to be hosting their own dedicated farm system.
Its unlikely to be practical on a typical desktop system given the foreseeable future of technology. Not to say there isn't entirely a use for what could be termed "offline processing". There could be users with the required private server architecture. I would think that one of the mid-term goals for Autodesk would be such a provision to at least Enterprise-level clients.
Unfortunately users with low-bandwidth service may not be the target audience for programs such as this. Kind of like most of us aren't the target market for Bentley (the automotive manufacture, not the software developer).
Remake does local processing but I'd be prepared to wait
