Should it be taking 30 minutes to import a 2gb .las file?

Every other point cloud software I deal with takes a couple minutes to import a 2gb .las file.

I'm just starting a new project, adding the .las and letting it index.

What is ReCap doing that is soooo special it runs 15 times slower than the others?

That alone is enough to make me go with other point cloud software but I am forced through this for use in Infraworks.

The only thing you can do to speed it up is

1) have an SSD as C: drive

2) have another SSD as 😧 drive

3) use a large sata drive as E: to hold the data you are not processing.

3) put the Recap Project folder on 😧 if the files that are to be imported are on E:

Do not use USB 3.0 or 2.0 drives to store your Recap Project on.

If the data you want to import come from an USB 2.0 or 3.0 drive, be sure that they don't go into powersave while importing.

Trust me, I have an SSD and all files are local.

I have 64 gb of RAM, my computer is about as fast as adesk could hope for.

This seriously stinks. I just got some more lidar data I need to pull into infraworks and I have to wait 1/2 hour or more just to see it.

Totally unbelievable, I'm going to have to do some marketing for adesk on this one.

Hi @JamesMaeding,

I am sorry to hear that but it does take sometimes to import larege project data files. I am not sure what ReCap is doing different than other programs but If you have any feedback that you would like to submit regarding any enhancement, please click on the “ReCap IdeaStation” link on the ReCap community home page.  This will help the Project Manager and developers hear your voice on any changes/concerns with functionality directly for consideration in future builds.

Thank you and have a great day!

@anil_mistry

Why do you say "large"?

A 2 gb .las is about average for a job flown with UAV.

Right? like is that new info to you?

What size job does the autodesk team test on anyway?

For those reading, if you get the latest ReCap, you will not see these long delays.

Getting to the most recent version was a runaround, so that will be another rant post.

Uh, no, there were no great posts that helped.

The one about using ssd's and so on is common sense IMO if you are dealing with point clouds.

A 30 minute time is way off the spectrum of normal behavior, not just slow hardware.

You and others should have picked up on that and immediately told me at least that it was abnormal.

I only figured things out after doing a new install and 2 updates to get to latest version.

I don't mean to sound like a grump, but you do need to hear the truth.

This kind of thing would not happen with autocad, but that is a more core product so adesk does not experiment with it as much.

thx
