Recap mesh function not working.

The pipeline we use is to register scans in Realworks and to export them out as PTX/E57. Import in to Recap and region the scans to fit the 30x30x30 cube limitation(whats up with that BTW?) and then mesh. Its worked before, how ever this week every attempted I have made to mesh has stayed at 0% or failed to mesh. This is by far the biggest project we have dealt with and granted it is a very complicated point cloud, as it is a below ground natural formation. Recap is also struggling to handle the project after a few regions are made, thus I have tried to import the separate RCP scans to the area I wish to mesh.

My dead line is tough as it is, this week has put me in to a criticle state on the production and the guys that work further down the pipe line are with out mesh to work with and burning hours. This also brings up my last concern that I am not sure is normal or not. We have obtained 3 licences for Recap pro to expedite the mesh process, how ever 3 licenses or not, the A360 drive will only permit one mesh at a time.

I am not sure if this is a tech support issue or a user error situation but please any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi @Anonymous,

Thank you for participating in our Community!!! I am sorry to hear that you are having difficulty with Object Mesh. I was wondering what version of ReCap you are using. Also, would you be able to share project data for further investigation? If you can then let me know and will share BOX folder with you to upload these files.

Thank you and have a great day!

Hi @Anonymous,

Thanks for reporting this.  It does seem that the service was disrupted early Friday.  The team spent time debugging this weekend, and everything should be back up and running now.  I believe the failed/stalled jobs will not automatically re-process, though - I would suggest re-submitting them.

Thanks,

-Ryan

Hi.

Thank you very much for the direct response.

First I have to stress that the NDA on this project is not funny. If every
thing about this is kept private and no files will go rouge then I can
share the account in which all this information is on.

We are using recap pro, we obtained 3 license and it seems that we can only
do one mesh at a time, That is one issues.
The second issue is that for some reason the mesh feature is not operating
at all, it will stay at 0% (as it did all weekend), or say mesh failed if
it does anything. The third issues that is the least of my concern is that
we have nearly 200 scans in both sections together and its about 600ft
long, if I put even 1/6th of the scans in one project it becomes highly
unmanageable. To be honest the nature of the scans is very complicated but
I have done testing before on a complicated area about a month ago and it
worked.

I am really really behind in the production and been that I choose this
pipe line its looking like it will be my head on a stick in a moment.

Today I have a meeting for the next project and will be on the road most of
the day, if you do need to get in contact with me feel free to call.

If you could PM for a number rather.

By resubmitting, do you mean re-uploading? Or just cancel mesh and restart mesh? Also this has been going on for a week, not just Friday. Is it possible to have a mesh operation going per licence? I have catch up to do or its my job. Is it possible to get a temporary exemption to the 30m cube and 20 scan limit? I have to ask, I really mean my job is hanging by a thread and I have coworkers that I time managed their projects to be free this week for exclusive mesh work.

You do not need to re-upload, just cancel the mesh job and submit again.

For submitting more than one job - you could try using a different Autodesk 360 account, although you'd need to re-publish the project under that account before you could submit a job.

I'm sorry to hear about your deadline.  But there is no way to adjust or waive the size constraints.  The Object Mesh service was designed for creating textured meshes of assets (think factory machines, furniture, etc).  For that purpose the 30m limit is quite sufficient.

Thanks,

-Ryan

Right now any other A360 Drive account that is not the companies has a
space limit that that wont support the size files we uploading. If I
transfer a license to say my personal Autodesk account will it upgrade my
A360 drive to the 100GB status?

Understand about the restrictions, still have to ask or you dont get right?

My last question would be, due to the size files that I am working with, would a structured E57 files (3.5GB per station) or a PTX files (5.5GB per station) work best? Whats the advantages and disadvantages of each? Cant really find easy answers to that.

Bonus question, if I load the PTX/E57 files in a project, could I go to the support folder and use their station RCP files to upload in to new projects? It saves time on loading and I need to section out the areas to save strain on my machines, so I will have to upload stations per section, would save me time if it is possible.

BTW, I resubmitted the mesh, it bolted up to 12% and now its stalled there.

Thank you for you help so far

  • I'm not sure about the storage assignments per account.  Will see if I can find someone who knows to respond.
  • I definitely prefer E57 to PTX for structured import.  It's a binary format and hence faster across the board.
  • Yes, you can attach RCS files to new projects, but be careful.  I recommend doing a 'Save As' after you've made the new project.  This pulls all the necessary files together into a new Support folder.

Hi @Anonymous,

If your Autodesk ID has ReCap Pro subscription and associated services assigned, then you will have 100GB of storage in your A360 drive.

Thank you and have a great day!

Have to say that you guys are super helpful and have some really good
information to share.

Came back from my meeting last night and the mesh had moved to 75%, how
ever this morning it is still at 75%. The second persisting issue is that I
have asked for a license to be transferred to my account, the drive has
been upgraded but the mesh function on Recap says its still busy. I have
updated the serial on Recap and it still persists. Should I uninstall and
reinstall with the serial designated to me? Have to go back for a follow up
meeting so I can only do that stuff tomorrow.

Would like to ask one more question. If I notice the server is buggy, how
do I Notify or who do I notify some one at Autodesk?

Again thank you for all your help.

This is a bullet point of the questions and answers from this forum page.

Q) - If the mesh has failed or has stalled, is this a user error or a technical error?

A) - Both are possibilities. I have found that if the mesh failed it is more likely that the point cloud was too complicated and could also have possessed stations that where incorrectly registered. It can help to narrow the area of the view cube and also check to see if something looks off to indicate a poorly registered station.

The servers do go down, as your own workstation would if it became over loaded. So if your mesh has stayed at 0% or the same % for 24 hours, it is likely the server went down (do be patient tho, some meshes do take up to 2 days from my experience) The only solution I have is to send a support case to Autodesk to notify them if they have not caught it yet.

Q) - Can I have an exception to the 30m cube or 20 station limit?

A) - Nope. Refer to server overloading issue for explanation.

Q) - We have multiple license for Recap Pro, but we are only able to do one mesh function at a time, why?

A) - Not 100% sure, but it has something to do with the link to your A360 Drive. To get around this I had the company license transferred to personal accounts that did not have Recap pro to begin with (You could just setup secondary work accounts so you dont have your boss thinking you trying to seal license). Make sure the serials match the station you will log that account too. The station will seem like it is still linked to the previous account until you start a new upload. Make sure that the upload is going to the new A360 Drive by logging in and viewing the files.

Q) - We have a large project that has tons of stations, everything is sluggish, any work around?

A) - "Life hack" Import your stations 5 or 10 at a time per project and repeat until all stations have been imported(5 to 10 per project), register or skip if they aligned already and save. In the support folder will be the RCS files of the individual stations. Find the stations that fit the section you want to work with and start a new project and import the RCS files of those stations, make sure to save as as soon as you have the project launched. This cuts the stress on your machine down a significant amount.

Q) - What structured file type is best?

A) - I dont know the technical pros and cons of each but it was pointed out the E57 is setup binary and is a better choose across the board. I have export both PTX and E57 and found that the PTX are roughly 5GB each as the E57 are 3.5GB each. So for saving space at the very least E57 is a better choice.

Thank you to anil.mistry and ryan.frenz for the help provided. I am still working on getting my meshes to not stall but that is the technical side of the server.

Hope this helps any one with similar questions.
