Recap is so slow it is useless

I am running Recap Pro 2019 and it is so slow when I open a recap file it is useless. It is unable to export my file as a unified RCP and it has cost me days of lost time.  Why does this program never work and when will it be fixed?

I want a solution.

Hello mate,
Sorry to hear that you are having problems.... recap depends upon the specs on your pc and also the size of your point cloud.
If you want to get the RCP into Revit I would export to RCS, that should go faster... and you could use the RCP as a visual aid.
Also remember that you could decimate the cloud.

Hope it helps, good luck!

Recap works find and I can edit and modify the file but it get soo slow after working with it that it is pointless to work in this software.

I have done all the tricks, new ssd, titian x and eight cores, but it still slows down to the point of taking hours to do things.

Are we really expected to work like this?

What size projects are you generally working with?  How many scans and points per scan?

I am also having this problem. Looking back through the forums it is clear that this has always been a problem with ReCap but it has never been fixed. I have a small job of only about 6 hires scans from the BLK360. I have unified it, then imported it again to ReCap, but it quickly becomes unworkable after a small amount of editing. The suggestions offered by AutoDesk as a solution to this issue are ridiculous.

I bought the BLK360 from Leica with ReCap Pro included as a necessary tool to accompany it. Does AutoDesk have any intention of actually solving this problem? I am wondering why I am charged an annual subscription for something that does not work. Please fix this problem.

I totally agree with the slowness and uselessness!

I have been using Recap now for a few years and find that it has never really been improved in terms of performance. I tend to use the Faro products to export to RCP files, but I am finding the FARO SCENE now has so many new tools that I am spending more and more time in this application giving the end user what they need rather than using Recap.

I am so disappointed that Autodesk do not see that this application could be so much more that it is now. Do they not understand that this slowness and poor performance is driving users to other applications. I feel that this product will soon be unsupported and users will be left with a tool that does not work in a design workflow that Autodesk say is seamless.

I work with laser scans frequently (between 20-40 scans max) I have utilised all the tips and tricks with regions, exporting rcs files etc..... also my laptop has been upgraded a few times and still the application is sluggish and poor.

They removed a very good beta tool (mesh object) that I assuming was because no one was using it, this could have been down to the fact that Recap is suffering with performance issues.

Unless Autodesk see this product is being used frequent they will not fix these issues, I urge users to take the time to tell Autodesk how they use this product and what can be done to fix this or it will soon become another SHOWCASE!

I think one of the biggest limitations for mesh use was processing online as opposed to offline. Also the size constraints severely limited it's use cases.

Again, so much potential being underutilized. Feels like we are just banging our heads against the wall.

At least give us some periodic announcements or communicate about progress being made or lack thereof.

I have to agree, that Recap is one of the most worthless programs, unless your data is under 20 scans.  I have been trying to clean 200 scans now for the past 5 days.  I have tried to export the scans to an RCS file, it ran 12 hours at 0% processed so that does not work.  Whenever you delete a few points, the next time you open the scan data it takes 20 minutes for the cloud just to open.  Why does the act of deleting points increase the data size?  Every year since 2016 I keep hoping to see improvements and nothing.  We depend on these programs to work, it is our lively hood, this is how we make a living, how about getting us something that works.  I think I will  teach a class at AU on all the problems with Recap, the changes that can make it useful, and what programs to use that actually work.

Hi @jason ,

When you delete points in ReCap to clean the point cloud, you can choose to save and optimize the project so that the deleted point status will be persistent into the files. Or you can choose SaveAs and Remove deleted points permanently to reduce file size and increase performance.

Why the deleting points in recap needs save as? Why it cannot be deleting?

I totally agree with this whole thread. I really hope that Autodesk will start adding much more effort for Recap since it is costing nowadays. I am currently seeking a better software because of the slowness of ReCap.

And no it should not be depending on my computer. Intel Xeon Gold 6154 CPU 18Cores, 128Gb RAM, Nvidia Quadro RTX 4000

This is how it looks when exporting rcs. Is this a joke? This is how it looks when exporting rcs. Is this a joke?

Slow product is an issue, but when I cannot even pick a target in 2020, when it is like 5 ft way.....

To me the 2020 is even worse then the 2019, at least in 2019 I could pick targets and not lock the system up.

Now when I lock it up I close the application and jump right back in.

What I have also experienced is that Recap Pro will not see my Autodesk login, so it reverts back to basic Recap. total pain in the rear. I have to log off the PC and log back in to reset this.

Targets are my biggest complaint at the moment though.

Sure would be nice if an Autodesk Recap Rep popped in here and helped out.

Hi @robert.rienE7F2G ,

Could you let us know what's the raw scan file format the problematic target extraction happens to?

Does it help if you switch to intensity view for target extraction ? Because in some cases, the color image may not align well with the real point cloud.

If you would like to share one raw scan file, it will be helpful for us to improve.

Thank you,

Yan

Yan,

I realize that, the issue is when I optimize it just sits in an endless loop for hours, I've let it sit in that loop for over 24 hours and it goes nowhere.  The issue with a saveas after deleting points is that the file you end up with is double the size and takes 20 minutes or so just to load, whether loading into recap or into a cad program.

What I have done, which seems to work, is export the RCP as an RCS unified scan, delete the points, and then optimize.  The optimize only took a few minutes and it seems to have worked, however, you are unable to change the origin point or orientation of the scan after you have done this so make sure you get that done first.

I am having the same problem. The file initially opens fine and edits are quick for the first 15 minutes. Then simple point reclassification starts taking a couple seconds, then a couple minutes and then it just twirls forever and crashes or I eventually force quit the program. It is taxing the ram. I have 48G of ram installed and it eventually uses all of it and then chokes.  Please let me know if this is ever fixed! I'm on the latest version Recap Pro 6.0.1.21. I have ran trial versions of other point cloud editing software on very large point cloud sets and didn't seem to strain my computer at all .

Hi JEREMY, I have an Intel I9 Proc 18 core machine with 64 GB of ram and I was having issues but have not on the past few smaller scan jobs. I’m currently working on a 600 scan project this weekend so I will post any issues or even non issues that I have. I’m not registering with Recap though, I register with scene and then use recap to convert that point cloud into an RCS.

Hi @yan.fu

I have the same issue with ReCap Pro (version 7.0.0.183) not finding some of my targets.  This has been an ongoing issue over the years.  On a typical project I have one or two targets that will not be recognized.  ReCap will just hang up for a while when I pick these non-recognized targets.  This issue is also repeatable so I will send you my FLS/RCS/RCC scan files.  Here is my shared ZIP  (406MB download) stored in Autodesk Drive.  FYI-I also use intensity mode because I move some targets during the color capturing time period of scanning.ReCap Target Selection Issue.png

Hi Tim,

Thanks for sharing your data.

We have created a task for the dev team to look into it.

Best,

Yan

So glad to see this thread. Given our most recent ReCap trial, it is clear that Autodesk is not standing behind this product. What is disturbing is the amount of money demanded for it --- when it underperforms open source solutions that are completely free. This is not our first encounter with Autodesk products. We have also trialed Maya and found it also to be far below the hype. Honestly, it's amazing that Autodesk remains in business. Do they not read these threads and perform quality control and iterate on their products? Perhaps the other flagship programs are more effective. This particular one (ReCap) is, as the thread states, utterly useless. It couldn't possibly be implemented in a professional context, and I speak with decades of experience in this area.
