Recap hangs on import and index

Anonymous
Not applicable

I'm running Recap Pro 4.2.2.15 to import and index (skip registration) structured/ordered scans from Faro Scene 7.1 in fls format.  While Recap used to be stable, i've found that in recent weeks something is causing it to hang during this 2-step process.  I notice no difference whether or not I wait to import all scans before indexing (skipping registration).  It may get 1 scan in or it may get 15, but almost all our projects now hang.  The good news is that you don't LOSE any data, but it resumes where it hung after restarting Recap.  On a 100+ scan project, this can be very time consuming.  Start the Recap process on fls files and go to bed, only to find out the next morning it hung on scan 3.  Restart and go again.  It picks up where it left off and may get several more (or all in rare instances) during the next try.  I haven't had a Recap project scan more than about 15 without hanging.

On restarting Recap it prompts to ensure you have updated drivers (an automatic notice regardless of crash cause I'm told).  I have confirmed this.  We have begun using Scene 7.1 recently but I don't know if this is causal or just correlated.

I've confirmed plenty of disk space on both SSD drives.  Running Precision 7710 laptop.

Anybody else experiencing this?  Others in my office have the same problem.  Very frustrating and time consuming.

-Scott

Hi @Anonymous,

Thank you for participating in our Community! Would you be able to let me know what version of FARO SDK you have installed? Also, would you be able to share some of these raw scans with me for further investigation?

Thank you and have a great day!

Ever since Scene 6.xxx, we havne't had to mess with Faro's SDKs.  I just assume Faro/Autodesk had addressed what used to plague those of us who regularly import fls files from Scene into Recap.  But maybe that's not the case...

While on my older computer i had at least a dozen Faro LS xxx.xxxx.xxx.xx  installations on my machine, now i cannot find any.  I wouldn't even know where to go look if they are embedded somewhere.  If its any help, we are running the most recent 7.2.xxx version of Faro Scene, and the most recent install of Recap Pro.

You may access a representative scan at the following link:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1z23f9vfmmudzq3/AADd-AMgQ-Kwzuca-9n2yX6Za?dl=0

Note, however, that i have done no testing to see if it hangs on the same scan numbers if i were to repeat the process.  This would be a very time consuming test.

(as i type this, i now have to kill Recap and restart it for the 4th time in the last 2 hours to resume import/indexing and its only 14 scans in to my 30 scan project....)

Hi @Anonymous,

I was able to duplicate this behavior with shared file. Looks like this file may be corrupted or something. Can you export as PTG/PTX or E57 and try again.

Can you import the files to Faro's software?  Or any other app that supports FLS?

Has the scanner be purchased or its firmware updated recently?  If so you might just need to install an update to the Faro SDK.  The version bundled with ReCap might not support your scanner.  I haven't heard of any changes to that but it can happen without us knowing prior.  Might be worth checking with your FARO rep.

Please, let me know if this helps.

Thank you and have a great day!

I have tested with the scan you provided and it failed to import in ReCap.

The error message Faro SDK gave is "No workspace".

Could you try to import .fws file instead of single .fls file to see if it works?

Thank you,

Yan

I will try to import FWS or LSPROJ.  Good suggestion. But as for the file being corrupt, this makes no sense.  Recap locks up, and on restart it processes the scan just fine - but is likely to lock up in 1, 2, 4 or more scans later.  Repeat.  Eventually it makes it through all of them.  This doesn't sound like a corrupt file to me.  if it were, restarting recap wouldn't solve the problem.

Again, this file has come out of Scene 7.1 after registering/processing, etc...

Any other suggestions?

Yeah. That's definitely weird. Recently we saw similar fls importing issue reporting on this forum.

I used a standalone Faro SDK (7.0.0.23) tester (Not ReCap) to load the file and it failed and reported the workspace error.

We will try upgrade Faro SDK to latest version to see if it solves the problem.

Thank you again for reporting this issue.

I have been having the same issue recently.  ReCap will import a seemingly random number of FLS files and then freeze.  I have found that the background process Autodesk ReCap Faro importer seems to be the culprit stuck at 0% CPU and memory usage.  If I right click and end that task ReCap continues to chug along and import some more scans before hanging again.  I repeat that process until I get done.  It's not much better than closing and re-opening ReCap, but it does save a little time just ending that task instead.  Looking for a permanent solution still.  FYI I have found that if I try to export a ReCap Project directly from Scene I have the same issue.

Hi @Anonymous,

Would you be able to downgrade FaroScane 7.1 to FaroScene7.0 and then re-export the faro files again and let me know if you are still seeing same behavior.

Thank you and have a great day!

I have also been having this issue....incredibly frustrating when you let a indexing sit overnight to come back and find 3% of your project is done and its just locked up

having to babysit this indexing procedure is a major issue and needs to be addressed

I have had same issue often as well, even when importing the Farao project file driectly .lsproj. However then it is worse as when I restart recap, it will continue but will have lost the correct position of the scans. so if it doesn't do it in one go then it is no use. Now I have resorted to use PTS files haven't tested other types. Then I hasn't frozen but I loose the 360 picture data.

It seems like this is a common experience of many users.  Perhaps it is related to Scene 7.1.xxx  Do you have any updates on your end?

Thank you,

-S.

Sadly there hasn't been any more updates as I am running Scene 7.1.1.81 and Recap 4.0.0.28.

Hi @harri_parker,

Latest version of ReCap Pro is 4.2.2.15. I would suggest to updating to latest version from Autodesk Desktop Application or try downloading latest version from Autodesk.com and then try again.

Let me know if this helps.

Thank you and have a great day!

Even though I am not him, I anticipate it not working for @harri_parker as the original post in this thread references the most current version of Recap.
