Recap can't combine scans into groups

I have been using Recap for a while now, and have never had this problem before. Once the scans were uploaded to the program I moved on to the next step i.e.; automatic registration. My project has about 250 scans. During auto-registration the program is unable to find any links between the scans and does not create a single group. I was previously working on version 2020, I updated the program to the latest version but this did not help. Recap searches for links for about 3 hours and does not create a single group. I have to link each scan separately and at the strongest link, the program displays 0% compatibility on all 3 indicators.
Has anyone had a similar problem and knows how to fix it?

That sounds frustrating! Here are some potential reasons why ReCap Pro might be struggling to automatically register your 250 scans and how you can troubleshoot the issue:

1. Scan Quality and Overlap:

  • Low Scan Quality: Issues with the scan data itself, like low resolution or noise, can make it difficult for ReCap Pro to find matching features between scans for registration.
  • Insufficient Overlap: If the scans don't have enough overlap between them (typically 60-70%), ReCap Pro might not be able to find enough common points for registration.

2. Software Settings:

  • Registration Settings: Double-check the automatic registration settings in ReCap Pro. Ensure they are appropriate for your scan data and project size. You might need to adjust parameters like "Minimum Correspondence Threshold" or "Maximum Correspondence Distance."
  • Coarse Pre-registration (Optional): Consider performing a coarse pre-registration step manually using a few key scans to provide a rough alignment before automatic registration. This can give ReCap Pro a better starting point for finding matches across all scans.

3. Hardware Limitations:

  • Large Dataset: A project with 250 scans can be demanding for your computer's processing power and memory. ReCap Pro might be struggling to handle the workload, especially if automatic registration settings are very aggressive.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Review Scan Quality: If possible, check the quality of your scan data. Look for factors that might affect feature recognition, like low resolution or excessive noise.
  2. Verify Overlap: Ensure there's sufficient overlap between scans (ideally 60-70%). Consider re-scanning areas with insufficient overlap.
  3. Adjust Registration Settings: Experiment with adjusting automatic registration settings. Start with looser thresholds and gradually increase them if needed.
  4. Try Coarse Pre-registration (Optional): Perform a coarse pre-registration step with a few key scans to improve the starting point for automatic registration.
  5. Reduce Dataset Size (Optional): If your computer struggles, consider splitting the project into smaller batches for registration and then merging the registered groups later.

Additional Tips:

  • Consult ReCap Pro Documentation: Refer to the ReCap Pro documentation for detailed instructions on automatic registration settings and best practices for large datasets.
  • Search Online Forums: Search online forums or communities for ReCap Pro users. You might find solutions or workarounds reported by others facing similar issues with large projects.
  • Contact Autodesk Support: If none of these solutions work, consider contacting Autodesk support for ReCap Pro. They might be able to provide more specific guidance based on your project details and software version.

By carefully reviewing your scan data, adjusting settings, and potentially optimizing your workflow, you should be able to get ReCap Pro to successfully register your 250 scans and create a single group for further processing.
