manual registering of multiple scans

I am using the latest version of ReCap ultimate. I have 5 scans from a handeld scanner that i need to stitch together. I am not seeing an option for any manual regsitration. It is doing automatic but only 2 of my 5 are registering correctly. I have tried creating RCP files of each scan, then importing each one into a master. Ive tried importing the source files all into one. Nothing gives me the option of manual registration. AutoReg is great when it works but i need to align these scans!

Hi Nick,

There should be an option for 'Manual Registration' when you hover the mouse on the main 'register scans' button.  That will take you into the classic two-pane manua mode.

I should note that ReCap doesn't really support registering handheld data.  You can sometimes make it work by consolidating the data into single PTX scans, but I'd be careful with that.  What type of scanner created the data?  What format are you using for import to ReCap?

True support for registering this type of data is upcoming this year.

The only option i get is index scans. I am using a handheld "DotProduct". I have no issues importing the.dp files. Just no regsitration option, only indexing and launch project.

Ah, ok, that makes sense.  ReCap only supports registration of fixed-position scans (where all points in the 'scan' are from the same origin).

As mentioned, you might be able to push something through from DotProduct via their PTX export, but it's not recommended.  Your best bet is to do your registration in their software.

is there any chance this has changed with ReCap 360 3.x ? I also have the DotProduct and would like to have 'manual' registration where I provide known points and the software does a 'best fit' to stitch scans together. Why isn't non-fixed point scanning supported? (just out of curiosity, not trying to be jerk.)

You do all this right on the handheld before bringing it into recap.

I understand the process of 'appending' one scene to another while scanning.  Are you saying there is also cloud-to-cloud registration in the Phi-3D software?  That is what I was specifically asking about. Because I'm encountering a lot of 'drift' and their 'stitching' software needs a little work still, that's why I'm asking about cloud-to-cloud registration.

You can add coordinates to checkerboards in phi-3d.  Appending the scan to each other is the extent to the cloud to cloud, but I imagine if you add checkerboard coordinates it may tighten it up.  Not sure.  We had alot of drift as well, thats why the handheld is sitting in the box and not going out to the jobs.  I dont see it as much more than a toy, especially if you dont append it to a fixed position scan.
