Making axis parallell with scan without small errors in ReCap Pro

Hi,

I have completed a 3D scan inside a large ship engine room to do a retrofit of the ballast system. All is registering well and I have the point cloud set up and ready to go into Plant 3D.

However, it is difficult to get the axis orientation exactly correct when using the "update origin" button in Recap; defining the axis by selecting perpendicular planes always leads to small errors. After probably a 100 tries I still end up with a small error in the axis orientation, which will without a doubt cause errors in the piping isometrics produced as compared to the real world.

Is it any way to define the axis directions manually in Recap without using the plane tool?

I've also tried manually rotating the point cloud in Plant 3D to make the vessel directions perpendicular to the point cloud directions, but this seems to crash P3D everytime.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated, thanks

Hi @Anonymous,

Thank you for participating in our Community! At this time there are no other way to define the axis directions manually in Recap without using the plane tool. This is an enhancement request and If you have any feedback that you would like to submit regarding any enhancement, please click on the “ReCap IdeaStation” link on the ReCap community home page.  This will help the Project Manager and developers hear your voice on any changes/concerns with functionality directly for consideration in future builds.

Thank you and have a great day!

As Anil already answered your question relating to ReCap, i am left with a hint relating to Plant3D.

You should be able to tweak the orientation of the Pointcloud, when you attach it to a DWG in your Plant3D project.

Instead of specifying the Insertion Point and Rotation on-screen, you can give xyz-coordinates and an angle in the "Attach Point Cloud" dialog window. That was always a reliable and stable procedure in my experience.

Nevertheless you should open a service ticket with Autodesk, so they can have a look at that Crash you encountered, and ask in the Plant3D Forum.

Thanks to you both.

Good suggestion doing the rotation when importing the point cloud.
