LiDar classification. Can I create an rcs file contatining only ground points?

We recently recieved a new LiDar data set for our County.  The problem is that the LAS files contain all point classifications.  I need only ground(Class2) exported to an rcs file for Civil 3D import.  Is this possible with ReCap?

Hi Jon,

I see that this case has been escalated to Salesforce. Has someone replayed to you yet?

I'm not sure if this is possible with ReCap. It would be best if all the classes can be exported as separate LAS files so they work in ReCap.

I used to be able to do what is described in the attached file in AutoCAD Civil 2015; that is, create a point cloud index that could then be filtered out for the ground.

What are we supposed to do now? This is missing in AutoCAD Civil 2016.

In regard to Jon's question; try LASTOOLS and ArcMap. LASTOOLS you can get pro bono from http://rapidlasso.com/lastools/

I have used these successfully considering ReCAP still does nothing with regard to using the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) standard for point cloud classifications that every other GIS product uses. AutoCAD Civil has (or perhaps had - it better still be there when I check) the ability to read the classification but filtering may be a lost cause. I am checking with some self built workflows to see what I can do without Civil 2015.

A strong suggestion is to get the the Point Cloud Index creation tool back into Civil 3D where one could read LAS files directly AND to to ge ReCAP reading and filtering the ASPRS classifications ASAP just like LASTOOLS do.

A workflow is attached.

Autodesk still needs to to get ReCAP reading and filtering the ASPRS classifications ASAP just like LASTOOLS do instead of filtering inside of Civil 3D.

Thanks guys for your responses. I've been out of town for the holidays and not monitoring the thread, so apologies for my lack of participation. Additionally, and to no fault of theirs, I have been unable to connect with Autodesk regarding the support case opened regarding this post. Special thanks to @roskirko for the detailed post and workflow! If the support case turns up any new info I will be sure to post it here. Thanks again and Happy New Year!

Hi Roskirko, do you know how to lower the density of points in C3D 2018? The way you explained in your word document isn't available for 2018 and the surface it creates looks horrible (see attached). I've tried smoothing the surface but that isn't working either. Who we purchase our CAD from said I need to isolate the ground points while in ReCap but I can't figure out how to do that either.

Thanks,

Keegan
