Is it posible to make room interior model out of the photos?

Hello!

I'm wondering if it's possible to create a 3D model of inside of the room using photos only and Recap software, and if it is, how?

Thank you in advance!

Hello milosprotic,

While it is possible to capture the interior of a room using only photos, there are certain things you need to take note of:

1) The position of the camera must change per shot. You should not just stand at the center of the room and take photo in a rotation. Instead you need to move yourself and the camera along each side of the wall in the room to have a reasonable stitch rate. Photogrammetry works on the principle of stereo image pair, hence for triangulation to work the position of the camera must be different.

2) Since most wall are featureless or monotone color, the algorithm in general will be unable to detect feature on the wall. We recommend sticking unique high-contrast markers on the wall to help add feature for the algorithm to stitch the image together. For example using newspaper as marker have shown to give promising result from past experiences.

3) The confine nature of the room might make capturing of certain part of the room difficult, like trying to reconstruct the area under a table or behind a shelf will be difficult.

Following these advice you should be able to reconstruct the interior of a room. Although we will highly recommending using ReCap Pro and a Lidar scanner for such capture instead of relying on ReCap Photo's photogrammetry capability, since a Lidar scanner is design exactly for interior scanning.

Thanks and hope you have a successful capture an do let us know how it when,

Naimin
