Improving Photo - to - 3d ( Object mode )

Dear Ladies and gentlemen,

In the moment I´m trying the free trial version of ReCap / ReCapPhoto and I want to tell about my experiences with it.
I´m not new to Autodesks Photo – to – 3D – solutions; in the past I used 123dCatch and ReMake, which worked fine. With ReCap, it’s a different thing – I cant get one useable result with the photo – to – 3d ( object ) method. Only one half of my models ( skull parts ) is created correctly as a mesh, the other half is not created, although the photos show this side, too. I tried everything – Starting with several fotosessions with different light situations, an increasing number of photos to be sure every aspect of the model is visble until painting the model, so it is no more glossy. I manually stitched it with ~ 20 survey points from every angle – always the same result with or without manual stitching ( The stitching process is not good explained on the Autodesk help pages. I found the Autodesk-video  with the Laocon-group about this process on youtube ). With ReCap Photo it is still the same - which took almost all my credits  for bad results.

Maybe my feedback is helpful to improve the software. In the moment, I wouldn´t buy a ReCap license.

With my best regards,

Hi,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

ReCap Photo's Object reconstruction option and ReMake uses exactly the same web service, hence the results will not be different.

ReCap Photo desktop application does not have the capability to enter manual stitch points for Objects. Hence I am not sure we understand your problem well. Could you please elaborate?

Regards,
Murali

Hi Mr. or Mrs. Murali,

Thank you for your answer!

I´ve been testing Recap and ReCapPhoto further and now I know how to handle
different objects.

My problems resulting in an unusuable mesh didn’t come from Recap – it was
the kind of object I´m trying to convert in a 3d model. There are several
parts of a skull, similar to a bowl, and I tried to get all photos from all
sides at once ( the convex and the concave side ), so I mounted the skull
parts on a thin stick. That didn´t work, because of the background missing.

My next tries were much more successful:

I placed the skull parts on a colorful magazine page and made two series:
one for the concave side and one from the convex side. This worked fine, I
didn´t need to stitch the photos, it worked without stitching. Now I have to
combine the two models in 3dsmax.

I ´ll be using ReCap now when necessary!

Thanx and have a good day,

Simone
