Is the 1GB the total size of all scans combined, or are you working with massive individual scans? Additionally, when you say 'import', are you on the step prior to registration, or is it the next step (indexing)? Also, if you could tell me about the type/speed of hard drive you have in the machine, that would be helpful.
I had a similar problem using the Beta version. 6 files, 2.5G total. Took about 1.5 hours or so to import and indexing once they were registered took almost 3 hours. No other file formats (pts, fls....) took that long.
