How to import .PTS files into Recap

I would like to open a .pts file in Autocad. I have heard that autocad point clouds can only open if they are converted to a .rcp file via Recap.
However, when I try to load my .pts file in Recap it doesn't work. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Is it because my .pts file is too big? (6.5GB)

Koo,
Welcome to the Autodesk Forums.
6.5GB! That's huge and might be the reason you're not having any luck in ReCap.
Try opening up that monster in >>>QGIS<<< or >>>CloudCompare<<<. If no luck there, then use >>>LAStools<<< to convert the PTS file to LAZ, after which you should be able to import into ReCap.
I'd love to get my hands on that monster PTS, but most file sharing, like WeTransfer or DropBox, has a 5GB limit. If you can find a way to share the file, there might be several ways to get it into AutoCAD. What does the file represent?

Hello Dave,

Thank you for your answer.
I am fairly new to the use of point clouds. I've never worked with the software you mentioned before. I have already installed QGIS and CloudCompare, but I have no idea how to work with it yet.

I'm trying to open my files (yes plural) in CloudCompare, but I still can't open even 1 of them.

Do you have any tips for this? Or are there any online user manuals for this software somewhere?

Thank you in advance,

Koo

Koo,
If Drag-n-Drop doesn't work in any program, then the problem is with the files. Is there any way you can post your data? If you have a file under 5GB you can use WeTransfer or DropBox. Over 5GB, maybe try >>>FileMail<<<, >>>SendTransfer<<<, or >>>MyAirBridge<<<.

>>>Here<<< is a good workflow for CloudCompare to ReCap.

Hi, Koo

Hmmmm, it's strange that ReCap won't initialize that file. I haven't experience only with 2.9 GB PTS file.. but check that your file let in system path without non-latin symbols (other codec/symbols/spaces) and to PTS file has only latin name...

May be the path's length to your file is more than 240 symbols? Try add system memory in Settings of ReCap...

I don't think that problem in file's weight (last days I download into ReCap e57 file that have 30.9 Gb and contains 2.07 Billion of points

Thank you all for your help.
The solution is much simpler: I was too enthusiastic 😅
I had only tried to import 6 pts files at a time.
By giving my PC the time and importing the files 1 by 1, the problem was solved.
