Excessive RAM Usage AutoCAD LT 2017

Computer specs

Windows 7 Pro x64

32 GB RAM

Intel i7-4820K CPU 3.7 GHz

500 GB SSD

AMD FirePro W7000 GPU

I have upgraded from Recap 2016 to 2017 and now 2018.

With 2016, while importing a 16 GB PTX file consisting of 15 scans, CPU usage seemed to stay below 50 percent.  However, since upgrading to 2017 then 2018, CPU usage has shot up above 90 percent and the workstation becomes laggy and unresponsive.

Is there a hardware or software tweak or some other magic switch I can use to bring Recap back to being well behaved?

Thank you,

James

Hi James

Have you tried the last version of ReCap?
Right now, at his moment, I am using Recap 4.2 and registering files from a Faro scanner, in a i7 6500u with 16Gb and Windows 10, and my CPU is running at 90% and memory about 50%, but without any disfunction or lag, and simultaneusly I'm surfing internet and writing this post.

regards.

Correction to original post:

I am not sure it happened, but the post title should have been "Excessive RAM Usage Recap 2017"

Amorap,

I have tried the latest version of Recap.  Same result.

Thank you for the response.

Hello,

that would indicate that the current versions have more multi-treaded capability than the 2016 version. So they should also finish sooner with the import of PTX files. If you have a dedicated machine for doing this, this is an advantage, if you like to work on the same machine, this is a disadvantage.

hello from Spain.

One possible solution, related to CPU usage, could be set a limit of used CPU cores by ReCap, in order to keep free some resources for use other applications.

The way to do this is like this:

1- Open ReCap
2- Open Windows Task Manager.
3- Locate the ReCap Process in the task Manager (in Windows 10, locate it in the "details" tab)
4- Right button mouse -> Set Affinity
5- Select de number of cores you want to be used in ReCap. Try different combinations and verify the performance.

Also, you can set the priority of execution too.

Other solution, related to RAM Usage, could be modifying the virtual memory settings. Check that your pagefile size is enough and that its located in a fast drive (usually the best size is about the half of your RAM, and placed in a SSD drive)

Note that this solutions can reduce the overall ReCap and Windows performance in other scenarios. Maybe the best solution is let Windows do their job of balancing resources.

Hope this can help.

Regards.

Has anyone resolved this issue? I've been having the same problem. The RAM used by AutoCAD LT 2017 skyrockets to above 95% and crashes my computer. I'm not using any complex commands, sometimes its as simple as using the MOVE command will cause AutoCAD RAM Usage to skyrocket. The files I'm working with are not large, no bigger than 1,500kb.
