E57 Import to ReCap severe decimation

I am trying to import a 19GB E57 file into ReCap (export from Faro Scene), I have also tried with an entirely separate scan that is 15GB. The file imports and creates an RCS that is approximately 1/10th of the size of the original E57 file. The point spacing appears to be reduced to an approximate 30mm x 30mm grid which is unusable for my purposes. I have checked all of the settings in ReCap and tried with decimation both off and set to "0".  The file created is slightly larger when decimation is set to "0".  I have tried this multiple times with multiple files and am getting the same result.  This is my standard workflow for the past year and I am just now running into this problem.

Thanks for any help,

Nik

Where did the E57 come from?  Could it somehow have been written in inches?  The grid size you quote could possibly be explained by that.

Just some thoughts.

It was exported from Faro Scene and dimensionally everything is on in the scan itself. And in theory it shouldn't even mess with density when I turn off decimation entirely (or set it to "0").

Hi @Anonymous,

I am not seeing this issue with the E57s that I have. If you don't mind sharing your scan, I will be happy to check it out. I can share a Box folder to facilitate the upload.

Thanks,

Ashwini

Hi @Anonymous,

I was wondering if you had an opportunity to gather the information that @ashwini.murthy requested yesterday to assist her in troubleshoot your issue.

Thank you and I look forward to your reply.

I will try to gather a cropped version of the scan that is easily transferrable.  As a side note I exported from Scene into a PTX file then imported and it worked well.

Hi @Anonymous,

Thank you for your reply and I am glad to hear that you were able to export PTX from Scene and importing into ReCap works for you. Please, let me know when you have scans for me to do further investigation.

Thank you and have a great day!

Attached is copies of a small section of the scan that I have exported into an E57 file then imported into ReCap RCS file.  Decimation is turned off, the RCS file is approximately 1/10th of the size of the original E57 (which is usually approximately the same size).  Also the point spacing in the RCS file appears to be approximately 3cm.  Let me know if you see something I am missing.

Since Autodesk doesn't allow the file extensions E57 or RCS I have changed them to allow me to upload these small point cloud files.  You will have to download and rename to open.

Test.GIF needs to be renamed to Test.E57

Test.JPG needs to be renamed to Test.RCS

Thanks for sharing the E57. Have you tried importing it in any other tool.

ReCap is not performing any unwanted decimation. I tried importing the scan in CloudCompare and ReCap, the point cloud looks decimated in both tools with default settings (attached image).

Thank you for following up, I was just writing that I had tested it a few different ways and it appears that it is being decimated on the export out of Faro Scene.  I will pursue corrections from that side!

Thanks again,

Nik

I figured out that this is happening on projects with very large numbers in the coordinate systems like state plane etc... Moving the (0,0,0) of the point cloud closer to the actual scan fixed my problems.  There were work arounds like exporting in different formats but overall this was the best solution.
