Converting cloud point data into a 3D Model

Hello, I'm new to Recap & would like to know if the software is capable of automaically or semi-automatically converting 3D Scanned cloud point data into an editable & exportable 3D model?

Thanks in advance

No.  But it's great at prep work for going into other Autodesk applications and cutting clouds to manageable size.  If you create Realviews it's like looking at a 3d photo from the scanners position.

Other products are out there for some extraction but it's still labor intensive and pricey software.

Good news is, you can pull dimensions inside your favorite Autodesk software without without being in the field on a lift 🙂

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Would Autodesk's app 123Catch be a
viable option?

Laser scanning requires some different technology to create models.   Most of the time, we like to have native objects in Revit, AutoCAD, etc.  To get that, you need to either model right inside the native software, or use something like ClearEdge's EdgeWise software to match objects to the clouds.  Many modeling companies are experts with this process and it is likely to be cheaper to hire it done for one or two projects.  There's a tremendous amount of education and cost into extration on large scale.

Take a look at the AutoCAD 2016 point cloud tools.  Autodesk is now including tools to work with point clouds.  Anyway you cut it, drafting/modeling on point clouds is a slower process than modeling proposed design concepts often completed for construction documents.  Checkout the Youtube videos on AutoCAD 2016 point cloud tools.

It's actually structured light scanning used for smaller reverse engineered
mechanical parts...what you mentioned previously still applies?

No.  Sounds like now you're into something more like Geomagic, 3D Reshaper, etc.  http://www.laserscanningforum.com/forum/

Reverse engineering is an entirely differnet animal than buildings.

Matt, I've done what you are asking for but requires a Polyworks subscription. Give them a look

There is no scan to mesh tool, or points to mesh tool in ReCap. But you can get a detailed mesh by uploading series of images to recap.autodesk.com
