Civil 3D Snap to node on ReCap file stopped working

Greetings,

For some reason I can no longer snap to nodes (the ReCap point cloud) in Civil 3D to produce 3D polylines.  It worked just fine a few days ago.

I've been forced to create in Cyclone and export a coe to make up the difference but my company doesn't have enough Cyclone licenses to make this a

reasonable workflow.  Has anyone had this happen and if so how was it resolved?

What version of ReCap did you use to create the project and which version of Civil 3D are you using for your modeling tasks?

ReCap 360 3.1.1.17 included a fix related to snapping compatibility in AutoCAD for projects exported to Unified RCS. I highly recommend upgrading to the latest version of Autodesk ReCap 360 (v3.1.3.4) which is available through the Autodesk Desktop Application.

Point clouds exported as unified RCS from Autodesk ReCap 360 3.1.0.12 may exhibit issues with snapping in AutoCAD and related products such as AutoCAD Civil 3D. This issue was isolated to ReCap 360 3.1.0.12 and was not exhibited in prior or subsequent versions of the product.

A solution would be to update to the latest ReCap 360 and create a new unified RCS from your original files.

Thank you,

Marc

ReCap version 3.1.3.4 was used to create the rcp and Civil 3D 2017

In addition to Marc's response, the snapping feature in AutoCAD is only available on points clouds created using structured scans (fixed-origin/tripod scans like FLS, ZFS, PTX, CLR).

What is the raw format of the scans in your point cloud?

Collected on a Leica C10, registered in Cyclone and exported as an E57 then imported into ReCap

E57 files can be either structured or unstructure. In ReCap, are you able to view the points in RealView as well as 3D? If not - then the scan are unstructured and snapping is not supported.

The points are view-able in Realview.  The E57 is structured.

The real mystery is why the points were selectable on Tuesday but not on Wednesday.  I was using this data for training of one our techs in an office 50 miles from mine.  The task was to pull lane striping from a ReCap file in Civil 3D.  He had a copy of the ReCap file and I demonstrated the snap to node technique on Tuesday and left him to complete the work on his own.  He worked on it Tuesday afternoon with no difficulties. Wednesday he informs me the snap no longer worked.  Of course I thought it must be operator error since it was new to him but discovered the snap no longer worked on my computer either.  I have since checked on this on 8 machines with 6 separate databases and snap to node doesn't work on any of them.

Is the 3D Object snap option turned on in AutoCAD? Sometimes this option may get turned off and its hard to notice.

Yes it is on.  But 3D object snap does not snap consistently to the cloud.  This is best accomplished, oddly I admit, through the F3 or 2D snap.

That is, when it works.

Hello,

Thanks for sharing the project. I was able to 3D snap to nodes consistently on the project you shared. Are you trying something else?

I too can get 3D object snap to show a crosshair when selecting.  It just doesn't actually pick on the cloud.  Never has.  Notice in the video that I posted

how the line leaves the cloud in 3D object snap?

Our best option has always been selecting nodes from the F3 menu but that won't happen for some reason since last week.

Cloudworx still works in that manner so I guess a work around is the only real solution.

Thanks,
