Automatic Ground classification is missing some ground

Hello All,

I want to create a surface from a point cloud and add contours to it in Map 3D.

In Recap, I tried the Automatic Ground Classification and unfortunately it omitted a large chunk of the actual ground beneath trees from the front yard of this very flat property.

So, I started over and limited the box in order to NOT see the ground and deleted the points above. The processing unsurprisingly was much faster, but it still didn’t include all the ground points.

Any ideas on why this may be or suggestions on how to improve this?

Thanks!

Hi Nara,
I saw your post in the Map 3D Forum too.
Not sure that I completely understand the problem. Is this public data that you can share a link to?
Cloud Compare's >>>Cloth Simulation Plugin<<< might offer a more granular way of extracting ground points.

Thank you, @Pointdump!

I've watched that tutorial and it looks like just the thing! I've downloaded the Windows version of CloudCompare but how do I actually get the plugin?

I've found my way to this site, but am nervous as it says it's not secure

This was a private property that my colleague used a BLK360 to scan. Traditionally we draw as-builts and elevations of existing buildings but we're wanting to branch out into preparing site plans for landscape design.

Nara,
It should already be included with your installation of CloudCompare. The Cloth Simulation Filter is under the Plugins Tab.

It's there but not active. Your screenshot shows the lettering in black and mine stays grey.

I'll jump over to perusing the cloudcompare forums for further advice. Thanks again for the steer!

@nara7ZXKX ReCap Pro also have a capability to manual cleanup, where you can add the missing points back to ground and take that final ground to ACAD/C3D.

Hi @ramesh_sridharan,

I am incredibly novice with Recap, but it is a PRO seat that my company shares. How would I go about manually adding the points back? I tried to turn off the points that were accurately classified as ground and then edit the unclassified points to extract the lawn area from those, but when I first hit the delete button to get rid of the stuff I didn't want, I got a notification that I had to unhide the layer.

Is there a manual way that's a little less tedious than multiple iterations of limiting the view window from various angles to prune out the noise?

Thanks!

Nara,
You've got to load a point cloud and select it before the CSF Plugin will un-grey.

Hi Ramesh,
I looked over your links. Autodesk DESPERATELY needs to provide more information and guidelines on >>>Automatic Ground Classification<<<.
