Export Powermill Model to Fusion 360

I am starting to get into Fusion 360 and considering using it for manipulating CAD files I am programming in powermill.  I normally use powershape side by side with powermill and getting models back and forth between them is so easy with just copy and paste.  If I am starting out in powermill, with a model already loaded and then want to export the model into fusion 360, what is the best way to do this?  When I right click on my model in powermill and chose export model I only see the export types listed as .dgk, .dmt, .ddz and .dmt.  To my knowledge Fusion 360 does not import these types.  I guess I'm looking for a .step or iges option.  Would doing this via Macro give me those options?  Getting it back into powermill from Fusion 360 seems more straight forward.  Any help or feedback concerning this is appreciated.

Regards,

Mike

HI @Michaelangelo631

Are you using PowerShape or PowerMill Modelling?

PowerShape offers more export options, this could give you more options to export.

What file type are you starting with? Maybe import this directly into Fusion before you start with PowerMill.

Fusion is a great product but in my humble opinion, PowerShape is much faster to perform the types of edits that would be required in a programming standpoint.

Jonathan,

I am using PowerShape.  Original models are solidworks files that are being imported into powermill.  Often times, after they are imported into powermill they will be re-positioned to line up with existing fixtures or vises.  If mid programming I decide I want to alter the model or add other features I would want to use a similar workflow that I have between powershape and powermill.  Namely exporting from powermill directly, making changes or adding features and then re-importing back to powermill.  I agree with you that PowerShape is very capable and I am not looking to replace it altogether.  However I would like to kick the tires in Fusion 360 more and for me this is a good entry way to do that.

Mike

Seems to be that the best way around this would be to assemble everything in PowerShape then export everything into a Fusion friendly format. That was if anything needs to be changed, that individual model can be then imported into Fusion (after a single export from Shape) and modified in Fusion.

Its a good idea "kicking tires" usually the best way to learn as well.

Cheers,

Jonathan
