In 2 of the other programs that work well with the HP MJF printer, they provide a graphic representation of the build through its cross sections. If you see the graphics below, they come from Materialize. (The other program that can make it is FabPilot) 

HP seems to love software that is able to show this. I trust the MonteCarlo nest, but this graph is an extra layer of comfort that my management team wants to see.

 

 

The graphs shown below are of the same build but packed differently. You want a vertical(ish) line and you want it to be evenly distributed about the build unit. In some builds, you see large spikes, use the Slice Area values to see how large the spikes can be.

Similar to part orientations, if there is an orientation option that will optimize the cross section, that will work well with HP and metal printers.

Slice your build room (Home -> Slice Parts)

View -> Show Slice Statistics

 

Thats maybe what you are looking for.

It worked! That is exactly what I was looking for, but it is a little clunky compared to the other programs. It looks like it must be resliced every time in order to update the slice analysis.

Caveat: Slice analysis currently does a blunt sum of all contours on a layer, it does NOT calculate a unification. Meaning, if you have intersecting or enclosed contours, they are still counted as if they were separate. For DLP and MJF processes that don't use offsets, this doesn't matter, but for MPBF, for instance, where multiple concentric passes along contours are common, this produces incorrect results of enclosed area.

 

(It does factor in the sign of the contour, though, so a proper inner contour – think "torus" – correctly subtracts from outer contours.)

This is not a concern for slice analyses called directly from 3D workspaces such as the ones for HP machines. The command works out areas correctly regardless of enclosed contours:

This still requires parts, and shells within parts, to be printable and non-intersecting.
