Clarification on Interlayer Temperatures and Peak Temperature Extraction in Netfabb

Hello everyone,

  1. I am new to working with Netfabb for my thesis and have encountered some difficulties understanding how interlayer temperatures are handled. From what I have read, the interlayer temperature is defined as the temperature of the layer after the printing of that layer has stopped. However, I am unsure if Netfabb only saves the interlayer temperature for the final time step, or if it records different interlayer temperatures for each layer, including the cooling and reheating of each layer as additional layers are printed.

  2. Additionally, is there a way to extract and view only all peak temperatures that arise during the printing process? I am interested in analyzing the maximum temperatures reached throughout the entire simulation.

Hi @bomboassclat ,

 

1.  I think this is best explained visually, by looking at some results.  There is a separate transient result for each step of the simulation.  So yes, you can look at the temperature of a lower layer after several subsequent higher layers have been added.

2.  Yes, there is a static "peak temperature" or "interlayer temperature" result which shows the maximum temperature over time.  If you use a PRM file with lack of fusion data, this will be included in the results.  There is a description of the various temperature results here:  https://help.autodesk.com/view/NETF/2025/ENU/?guid=GUID-0C7F8293-412A-4BDF-AF75-DDABCD9AB027

Thank you, that's quite interesting. You've been really helpful, but I still have a few questions. Netfabb mentions the "Interlayer temperature – This is a global, single increment result, which shows the modeled temperature between each layer, right before the subsequent layer is rastered." However, you're discussing peak temperatures. What happens if the interlayer temperature increases due to reheating from subsequent layers? It seems that Netfabb might be overlooking this aspect since it only records the interlayer temperature after a layer is printed, without considering the possibility of the temperature rising again past the initial peak due to reheating. Am I missing something here?

Hi @karimalsariehVM7ZJ,

 

Yes, that is an important distinction.  Netfabb displays interlayer temparuters, not peak temperatures.  I shouldn't have conflated them.

 

However, I think that for the purposes of build quality, interlayer temperature is more relevant.  The build quality of a layer will depend more on the temperature of the layer immediately below it at the time that it is printed.  The temperature could continue to rise, but that should have less of an impact on quality if it happens after a layer has finished printing.
