Open Faro FLS Laser Scan File for Navisworks 2018 and Newer

Can someone please provide insight on how to open/append Faro FLS Laser Scan Files into Navisworks, or another quick way to get working files loaded into navisworks?

We need a way to open 250+ working files in navisworks for alignment purposes before final export which takes hours. We thought the fastest route would be FLS as it is native. but we cannot find recent information on how to do this within the newer versions of navisworks even though its stated

we already tried the Faro SDK 5.5 with no luck. continue to get error message saying file cannot be loaded (no code or specific verbiage of why it cannot be loaded) can someone please help?

Did you try with Recap and then into Navisworks?

Recap takes 8+ hours to create... it is great as a final deliverable for BIM coordination (usable in Acad, Revit, and navisworks), but not for inital project alignment. We are looking for a faster solution to navisworks that takes a few mins to an hour, not 8+ hours

Please chime if anyone knows the secret to getting native scene files viable in navis without timely export process.

If you must know why....

It is because architect models are drawn perfectly straight when existing buildings are not actually straight. for coordination purposes it is faster/easier to adjust the scan around an arch model vs re-creating an entire arch model.

I've just added a handful of FLS files to Navisworks and they work fine, so I'm sure it works. If you can upload a couple of files somewhere I'm happy to test it on your files.

Importing FLS files directly in Navisworks sometimes works, sometimes not. It depends on the File type used to create the FLS and the FLS library installed on the computer.

Using the most recent Recap will also install a recent FLS libary on your computer.

If you expect the FLS files to be in the right coordinate system and you would skip Registration in Recap anyway, then you could use the command line interface Decap.exe to convert one or 2 FLS files to RCS files and attatch those in Navisworks. If it's ok, then your project alignment is done.

Gotcha. So us having scene on one computer and recap/navisworks on another could cause the issue of varying types of FLS file exports/readers. To eliminate the variables we are going to install navisworks on the same computer and run a test file through. I hadn't herd of Decap.exe and will try this solution, and report all findings soon!

Thanks for all the support!  🙂

use the link below to download the file as it is over the 75MB limit. The file was produced with a raw scan from the SD card. I used a single computer that has the latest version of scene 2019.0.1.1653 (7.3.1.1653), the latest version of recap (5.0) and latest Navisworks 2019 Manage (update 2)

Download FLS file from dropbox

I still get the same error message "orderedFLS_Pru_drainage_scan_011.fls could not be opened or is unavailable. its recommended to re-open your model to avoid data loss".

I've downloaded it and tried it in Navisworks and Recap and get errors for both programs on that FLS file. I'm leaning towards that it might be corrupted?

Install the same Scene version also on the computer with Recap/Navisworks. No need to use Scene on that computer or have a license, just the installed and registered DLL might help.
