Navisworks Manage 2012: File .nwd has an Unknown Version Number

I use Navisworks Manage 2012 and I am unable to open a .nwd file. I suspect the file was created in a newer version of Navisworks. Is there any other way I can open or import this file without having to install a newer version of Navisworks or without asking the originator to re-save in 2012 version?

No there is no other way. You need a Simulate or a Manage to open and Save as the NWD file. In your case you might need different steps.
Navisworks 2014 is the newest version that can save in 2014 NWD format.
Navisworks 2015 can only save as 2014 and 2013 versions
Navisworks 2016 can only save as 2015 and 2014 versions
Navisworks 2017 is released, I have no information but I expect it can only save as in 2016 and 2015 versions.

Patrick is spot on.

For any given release of Navisworks:

* it can read any NWD file of equal or older version number

* it can write NWD file of current version and two previous versions

For Navisworks 2017, the file format did not change from 2016.
