Measurement Point-to-Point from grid intersection to edge of graphical object

Hi,

I can not get the Review -> Point to point measure tool to snap to the intersection point of 2 revit grid lines. I don't get it - what is the point of providing a way of displaying revit grid lines if you can not snap to them with the measure tool?

Has anyone here succeeded in snapping to a revit grid intersection point? An odd thing is that the measure tool does show a grid label and a circle symbol when you try to snap - but it doesn't get the xyz coordinate into the Measure Tools dockable window.

Unfortunately, there is no snapping option for the measurement tool in Revit. In Navisworks, grids are just there for visual reference.
If you want to actually keep the Grids in the Navisworks model, try bringing in the Grids Dwg file. That way you can measure the distance between two grid lines by locking the measurement tool direction ( Along X, Y or Z). Hope this helps!!

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately your advise doesn’t help us, because we only receive nwc files exported from Revit. We don’t use Revit ourselves. The only place we see the grid is in Navisworks but as I mentioned the grid can not be snapped to.

Is it possible to request for a copy of the grids in AutoCAD format?  Grids often do not change over the course of project development so the request should not pose a great hardship on the lead model author.

What I'm pointing out is that the way grids are presented in Navisworks are like an after thought by persons who never worked in engineering - I'm all for that non physical objects like grids, obstruction volumes, insulation, spray cones, gas detector line beams, crane radiuses and area boxes are handled differently so you can toggle them on and of like layers - This is the way it should be in all 3D viewers I think -  but it is not very clever that you can not measures to the grid lines - people want to know how far from a grid line an object is - a bit like you can show current camera position with reference to the grid in the HUD. Of cause you could model the grids as "proper graphics" but then they are no longer recognized as grid by Navisworks and you will not benefit from the features linked to grid such as show grid above/below - toggle on/off.

@ulski1

Navisworks has no "ideas forum", so head over to AUGI and vote for this (you need to register). Who knows, with enough votes, one day it may be a new feature!

Just to mention that the Naviswork Ideas Station does exist...

I also like this idea (grid measurement)

yeah, you're right, my bad... I'll vote for the idea to have the idea station to propose the idea to measure to grid axes Smiley Very Happy
