Import Navisworks file into Revit

Hey all,

I've been hoping to use Manage 2018 on a project but I noticed that pulling in a Revit 2017 file (Importing the native file) just causes it to hang. I don't recall there being an issue with pulling in previous versions of a file type (Newer obviously yes) Is this "Feature" here to stay or just a miss in the current version? We should be able to coordinate any previous version of a native file type (Within reason say 2 versions back) in the most recent version of Manage and simulate. I can think of numerous cases where this work flow would occur.  I prefer to use the native files as it keeps content live and reduces the need to open Revit models either manually or automated.

Windows 10, NavisManage/Simualte 2018 (SP and HFixes up to date) Revit 2017.2

Thanks

Hi @Anonymous

this is not expected behavior from Navisworks when opening a Revit model in a previous version, have you performed and audit to the model? If so can you share the file with us? If you can't share it with the forum you can upload it to the case that was created with me by following instructions on article below:

@tino.freitas Attached is an mp4 of the process. I cut out the fluff. The Revit model is just very simple geometry based on our company Arch template. The model was Audited and Purged prior to attempting to import. The progress bar essentially stops @ around 12% (This % value is typically where the hang occurs). I let the 10MB file run for 30 min before terminating the import. I have also included an mp4 of the same process but using Manage 2017 which you can see works as expected.

Hi @Anonymous

Thank you for the videos they illustrate very well the issue you are having, however we cannot reproduce it our system and as you know that is key to bring it up to development for investigation. At this point we would like you to consider the following:

  • Upgrade the Revit file to 2018 and then open it in NW 2018 software.
  • Try a different Revit 2017 format file and see if you have a similar result.

If any of the above suggestions result in a normal opening of the files then I would start by seeing what is different about this Revit file. Does it have any Links or corrupt content?

Let us know if this helps you.

Ok so I created 2 fresh models one in Rvt 2017 and one in Rvt 2018 both have a freshly created linked model in them also. Very simple stuff based on the Rvt 2017 and 2018 OOTB Construction Template. It has just a few walls and a floor.

To see if it was something in the import settings I deselected everything but "Convert linked models" and import "Navisworks View"

Importing the 2017 Revit into Navis Manage 2017 no issues.

Importing the 2017 Revit into Navis Manage 2018 Hang @ 16.6%

Importing the 2018 Revit into Navis Manage 2018 Hang @ 12.3%

The files have links but that is not a problem in Manage 2017 and a function I depend on to build my models.

The files are just freshly created today based on the OOTB Revit template for each version

The files were created in their respective version (No files were upgraded)

So it seems that Manage 2018 (At least mine) is unable to pull in a native revit file regardless of it being Revit 2018 or 2017.

I have attached the Rvt files to the screencast below.

Hello @Anonymous,

Thank you for your video and for the time you took to create it. We have come to the conclusion that there has to be something wrong with your Navisworks install since it is not normal that it hangs on such a simple model. Please follow instructions on article below to do a clean reinstall of your product and let us know if it improved:

Ok I will attempt a reinstall to see if that resolves the issue.
