How is Navisworks tracking clashes?

Sometimes, the GUID or shape of an object changes between v1 and v2 of the model, but Navisworks still recognizes the clash as existing. I'm wondering — what does Navisworks use to track clashes across model updates?

Is it relying on:

  • The object name

  • Geometric data

  • Spatial coordinates

  • The object's position within the model hierarchy

  • Or something else?

Additionally, what is the best way to ensure that the clash groups I’ve created are being correctly maintained and updated when I append a new model version?

Thank you,

Hello,

Thank you for posting on the forums. We cannot give exact details but Navisworks has an algorithm that works out how likely 2 objects are to be the same and that is how it knows a clash result is the same.

Sorry I cannot give you more details but this is Navisworks' "secret sauce".
