Embedded Texture is not visible in published NWD

Embedded Texture is not visible in published NWD

Hi,

I'm having difficulty embedding a texture in Navisworks Manage 2019 and having it appear on Navisworks Freedom on other peoples machines.

I have created a surface with Nearmap imagery applied as an Autodesk material. When I publish to NWD, it works fine in both Manage and Freedom on my own machine. However when my colleagues try to open up the model, the surface appears grey with no mapping/texture.

I have ensured embed recap and texture data has been checked and have tried all render style modes and lighting options to no avail.

Has anyone else experienced this and have any solutions?

Thanks in advance,

Richard

Hi @Anonymous,

I did find a report of a similar sounding issue and I'm happy to share. Hopefully, it can help here!

In this this particular issue, a model set up with custom materials and textures will not embed correctly on publish.
The custom materials will not be saved in the new file and will be missing when opening the saved file on a different machine.

One or more of the following steps may help:

  • Creating a new material rather than using existing default and save the image with that new material.
  • Save the current Navisworks file (NWF) before publishing the NWD.
  • Make sure to select the "Embed ... Texture data" in the Publish dialog custom materials will not be saved in the new file and will be missing when opening the saved file on a different machine.

Please mark any posts that help with "Accept as Solution" and thanks.

Hi Kelsey,

Thanks for the response. I've tried all of the below but unfortunately the texture is still not saving with the NWD even with embed option selected.

From other older posts I can see it seems to be a known issue. Is Autodesk planning on resolving this so that custom textures can be embedded into an NWD as the option suggests? Or is this only for Recap data?

Is there a workaround that will allow users with Freedom to see these custom materials by perhaps saving the original image file in their own directory?

Thanks,

Richard

I have had the same issue where standard textures from the Autodesk material library are used in the model and when published with the embed textures fails to display in Freedom on another machine. Haven't tried in 2020 version but seemed like a bug to me in 2017.

Not sure if it's because Freedom doesn't install the materials library, but then the embed should get around this.

Hi @Anonymous,

These are the only workarounds I have found. Yes, it seems to be an issue we are looking to resolve. I will report back here if I find any updates or additional workarounds for you to try.

Thank you.

Thanks for that Kelsey hopefully this gets resolved soon.

When you say workarounds, does that mean that the embed function does work for some and not for others or is it across the board?

Hi
I'm also very interested in this solution (Not workaround) since we have the same issue.
I can see the texture/material when me and my collegues open the NWD (publish or Saved As), but when I send it to others outside our organisation then they only get black textures.

> There is something really wrong here and needs to be fixed <

I have been in contact with Lucy Kuhns about this since June 2018, but she didn't have a solution for it.

Issue is a bit different in my case where only I am able to see the textures. Both colleagues and external have missing textures so the surface just appears grey.

Hi

Could you check if your collegues, when they open, get the error about not being able to find the library.
And if they do, does Navisworks then create a library at C:/program files (x86)/1/Mats ?

The materials/textures still don't work but no one have been able to explain to me why this is programmed in - just to give Autodesk a bit more to look at.

Hi @Anonymous,

I'm afraid I don't have much info to share here outside of it is an area that Development is looking at for a future release of Navisworks.

Hi,

My colleagues do not get the material library error.

I have however now managed to get the texture showing up for my colleagues. What I did was use a material which was stored on a common drive such that when they open the model, it can find the material using the relative path.

I doubt this will work for external recipients who do not have access to the drive so there is still an issue with the material actually embedding into the file as the option would suggest. So hopefully Autodesk can fix this soon.  @Kelsey.S @Anonymous

Hi Kelsey,

Can you please advise if the development team have made any progress with this issue since we last spoke?

Thanks,

Richard

Hi all,

Anyone find any workarounds for this? Do some of the older versions of Navisworks allow you to Embed the image into a material without linking back to an external image file?

Thanks!

Hi all, found a workaround for this using Infraworks. You can then export the surface with the image embedded as an FBX and import to Navisworks. Only problem is you've got to have access to Infraworks! Hop this helps (some)!
