Why is texture quality so low when transfering model from Mudbox to Maya?

This head model for school assignment is still a work in progress. Also, the paint job is just a quick test (not at all what I intend to use for finished product). However, the quality gets really botched when transferring into Maya. How do I get the paint/ texture quality that is displayed in Mudbox into Maya?

I'm having major issues. First, I was not able to get good quality out of numerous retopologized heads and body meshes. I ended up having to sub divide the body once in Maya because chest detail decreased, and I need more edges/ vertices to connect the head.

Then, after connecting the head to the body and merging the vertices, I was not able to get good quality painting in Mudbox using UV Map painting. Thus, I had to switch to PTEX mode to which I am having further issues with.

I've attached two screenshots to show what I mean. I have not set UV maps in Maya because my professor has said we can either do standard UV mapping in Maya or use Mudbox to paint our models. I have another character due next week along with this one, and I honestly thought it would be faster to paint in Mudbox. However, it's just not working out how I had hoped.

Also, prior to attaching the head to the body and retopologizing head I tried to extract a normal map, yet the results gave me odd deformities and markings. I tried loading the normal map within Maya material editor via bump map settings, and nothing was displaying on my model.

problem 1: once model is retop inside Mudbox. Only way to keep the painting information is to transfer with ptex option for textures. option 2 is to give the new retopo uvs and reimport in back into mudbox> Then do a transfer paint layers (link)

problem 2: the reason why the texture looks low res is because of your viewport 2.0 setting. under Renderer tab>Viewport 2.0> click the box next to it> a window will open>under Bake Resolution for Unsupported Texture types> set it to 2048 or 4096 for better display. just close the window.

Thanks for responding. I already had the Bake Resolution set to the highest (4096).

Also, I ended up setting up the UV maps for my model in Maya and then transferred model to Mudbox using UV maps instead of PTEX. Everything is working fine now. PTEX is a cool feature for Mudbox only, but from what I experienced it just didn't work well with Maya. I will say that Mudbox has become my favorite app for texturing UV maps.

PTEX is so easy to use, but only when strictly using it for Mudbox. Importing into Maya brought up major trial and error for me.
