z and mud arnt rivals... they live side by side in a lot of pipelines...
i agree. also used to love mudbox and didnt want to give it up for a long time and waited, waited and waited... Hey people, wake up! After 4 years of doing nothing, do you really believe that Autodesk will bring something competitive?????? The others were not sleeping in the meantime and they are light years ahead now. Mudbox will never catch up with them. I personally change to substance and zbrush, because they have the future. yes, i'm sad but i want to keep pace with the industry.
Mudbox doesn't have to hit feature parity with an application like Zbrush to be a worthwhile offering that keeps people within AD's universe. There are a TON of 3D artists out there that don't need the full toolset of Zbrush, and many more that don't want to invest in learning Zbrush because it's so poorly designed from a UX perspective.
If Mudbox was updated with some key tools like dynamesh, its ease of use and direct integration to Maya/3DS Max would be enough for many people to adopt it.
This is, of course, just my opinion.
Brendan This isnt your opinion, this is more like a fact. And the fact that those few simple features havent been implemented in (which is all it really needs) shows that Mdx development team is either on sleep mode, or completly underfunded, or nearly non existent. I cant find any other reason what could be going in a way of this not being integrated, its plain obvious.
There is a new development team working on Mudbox right now, in case you have not heard.
Meanwhile, I do not understand why you waste your time reminding us all the 4 years without new features if you are already using Zbrush.
Go, continue using Z, and be happy.

i have recently changed to zbrush because there is no way around, the studios require zbrush knowledge, its a must have nowadays. and i have been using mudbox up to 2017 version 😛
if you want to work in studios and stay employable , you need to learn software which is standard nowadays, and unfortuntely AD missed this chance when they stopped developing mudbox many years ago. This is a fast changing industry, if you dont keep pace, you are out of market. im open to start using mudbox again if they really bring out something worthy. but just dont want to waste my time waiting for a wonder and then wake up one day and realize that the world has changed and my knowledge is outdated and not required any more...
cheers
I mentioned it earlier in the thread, but this Maya Future Modeling video showcases some cool sculpting R&D that was thought to be incorporated into Maya in the near future. It never made its way to Maya. It is a natural fit for Mudbox. Autodesk has been clearly researching the technology and it appears to now exist within Autodesk. Watch the video and tell me that that technology wouldn't put Mudbox back on the map! It will be up to @jill.ramsay and her Mudbox team to implement.
@jill.ramsay has indicated that they are working on new development for Mudbox. As her team is new, we should give her team the benefit of the doubt and see what they produce. It is true that Autodesk seemingly abandoned Mudbox over the past several years. However, I believe that the newly designated team and @jill.ramsay's open discussion about how they are embarking on new development for Mudbox, indicates that Autodesk is changing its direction on Mudbox.
We will see.
From what I've seen, many studios allow artists to use the tools they are most comfortable with. Seems like all the major game/film companies have licenses of both Zbrush and Mudbox, and are fine with either. Many of the modelers at Naughty Dog use Mudbox, for example. Of course, this is all very anecdotal.
It goes without saying that Zbrush is the predominant sculpting application and will probably continue to be going forward. But AD doesn't need to put out a sculpting solution that OWNS the market. There's room in this field for more than one application in each category.
Hey,
I also really like modbox. I would like this program to be developed. But Autodesk does not do anything about it. The only thing that changes is the starter board 🙂 2016, 2017, 2018 - it's hard to call it development. They do not even erase the errors. Mudbox 2016 on macOS does not log off correctly - it always hangs - it's a known bug. The same we have in 2017 and unfortunately in 2018.
As someone whose gone back and forth on this for a long time I can tell you I too am ready to jump ship...but that I love Mudboxes all around feel and its still very hard to beat. Zbrush has some beautiful tools yet one area it lacks that I keep discovering is very simple yet very annoying and thats how it does not use alt or cntrl to tumble. Its hotkeys are spread so far that just adjusting the brushes becomes this counter intuitive reach across the keyboard....
Anyways Im not here to argue but rather just say kudos to the mudbox team for their work they are doing on the new release! I know those of us who've chimed in here all are obviously aware of just how promising this program was and still is! Oh...Im excited to hear the release and hope that it includes the tools people have been voting for and anything else they can innovate for us.
Skymattered!
HI ! I see that Mudbox 2018 is ready for download,.......but there is no information of new features, no info of anything.
Is this a final release? Beta?
cause there are no new features...
Mudbox 2018 is, for now, a compatibility release with the other 2018 products. If you look upstream, there is a team working on new features but it may take some time.
Thanks for the info 😉
One tap one stamp should either be a new brush or just a option in the brush setting
.
You should vote for it in the ideas section. https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/mudbox-ideas/idb-p/969
