Having issues with plane cuts and separating shells

Hello all. Ive been trying to split up some stl files and add some keys into them to make assembly after printing easier. In every file I've attempted doing a plane cut and separate shells function I've had meshmixer go crazy. It will usually just make the object look fragmented or it just grays out the whole build area. Ive tried usuing different models and tried truing the model solid to see if that fixes it with no luck. The pictures attached are what happens after I do my cut and separate.

Such issues happen if there's no printer set. So expand the Printers list at MM's top>right and set some. You may hide its rendering via menu>View>ShowPrinterBed.

So even though I'm trying to just edit files and not generate code it has to see a printer?

You don't have to see the printer (switch its rendering off via View menu) but MM needs to know one (at least at some systems).
