Function, Slice, from v 3.0 was removed, how to easily reproduce

Hello,

I really need the slice function as I haven't seen any other software make it this easy to do this. I notice it was remove after v 3.0. I had tried to have this version of the software and the most current version installed at the same time but the installer removes this. Does anyone have a recommendation on how to get this functionality back with out having to keep uninstalling and reinstalling the version I want. The reason I need the quick slick is because the models I want to slice into 1-3 inch tall slices are 8-10ft tall at scale. Other methods, netfabb & plane cut within meshmixer, I've found are their inaccurate or take a long time because of the number of cuts I need to make.

Ya the Slicing function was removed when Autodesk disbanded the 123D team.

You can still do it but needs to be done manually with this work flow.

  1. Align you object to the printer bed
  2. Go to the transform tool and set the snap step value to whatever is needed (ie 13.3mm)
  3. Edit>Plane Cut. Set the submenus to "Slice (Keep Both) & "Remesh Fill". And click on the green Snap and green Absolute.
  4. Plane cut at all the increments you need
  5. Edit>Separate shells
  6. Export

Or you if you want to go down the rabbit hole of the mmAPI to automate the process...

But I'd only recommend this route if this workflow is something you have to do daily. Or look at https://www.remouse.com/ for a quick and dirty way of recording and automating mouse clicks.

@hfcandrew, I had tried your instruction and the cut plane move at 2 mm increments instead of the 5 mm set transformation. I then tried the the pivot approach @Anonymous suggested in this post. but the slices did not go through the model and create separate parts. I'm unsure if the api will work now considering these issues.  I was hoping to create something similar to the MM Slicer script. except I'd  hollow out the models before I create holes for the dowels. I'm not sure if I need to hollow the models out at a different point in the workflow or if I need a different approach.

I was reviewing the documentation trying to see if there are modules which would allow me to determine the best places to dowels holes in and to then create empty space for them to go in later. I think I should be using some of the functions from demo 2 spatialtest, demo 4 scene. Or do you think it makes more sense to use fusion 360, after the models has been hollowed and sliced, for determining the best spot for the dowels and cutting a hole out of the models?

Thanks for any and all help in advance.

I've tried a many things since the program wasn't working. I've tried plane cut on a different model. I've restart my computer. I've tried the plane cut both before and after I hollowed/Make solid the model and nothing work. I've tried uninstalling the program and reinstalling the program, on my main drive and an additional hard drive. I've tried it with and without the pivots as a reference but it hasn't created a two piece.

I'm now at a complete loss about what is going on. The only thing left that I can think of is something related to the api messed things up. Does this idea make sense to anyone?

Just to make that sure:

After you did EDIT/PlaneCut in Slice(KeepBoth) mode both halves are still combined to a single object.

You need to run EDIT/SeparateShells to get separate objects from this.

@Anonymous, thank you for pointing out that I still needed to separate the shell. That resolved my issue.
