Convert support to solid problem - extra geometry

When converting overhang supports that were manually edited to solid, non existent geometry is generated.

After working a lot on a mesh being prepared to be printed, the conversion to solid generated all kinds of weird geometry that were previously deleted. I think this problem is related to this post.

Meshmixer 3.5.474, windows 10 64bit

Deleted meshmixer.ini? yes

Reproducible? yes

Steps:

  1. Run meshmixer
  2. Import bunny
  3. Analysis -> Overhangs
  4. Replicator 2mm defaults
  5. Generate support
  6. Delete supports from right ear from top to bottom
  7. Convert to Solid
  8. Problem

This is making very difficult to customize supports.

Thanks in advance,

Mauro.

Thanks for that very well done description!

Yep, there's definitely something wrong solidifying supports when some of the branches were removed.

The funny thing is that it works outside Overhangs. You may separate the object via SELECT and run MakeSolid on the remaining supports and Combine object and supports again..

Are you sure that you actually need this step? Current slicing software can handle such multi shell assemblies as you get with the raw supports quite well. Slicing software improved since RMS did that. I use ConvertToSolid not often these days (gives bigger file sizes, slower slicing...)

Being a developer, I know how hard it is to find bugs and how important it is to describe every detail of the problem Smiley Wink

Well, this was my first attempt at supports with meshmixer and I didn't know that it was possible to export them as is! I was able to delete the original object's faces and keep only supports to be sliced in cura using per model settings, so I actually don't need it!

Thank you very much,

Mauro.
