unfold surface???

Is there a way to take a cylinder, solid or surface but preferably solid, and unfold an edge to create somewhat of a sheet metal layout? I have to do a 2d visual layout of a 360 rotation and I was thinking I could create a cylinder, cut out the visually blocked areas and unfold the edge.

I don't really have anything yet. Cutting the cylinder kind of wastes time if I don't know how to unfold it. All I'd do for an example is just create a cylinder and make a slice into it at an angle.

I found the AMCHLAY.LSP zip but it won't run because it indicates the dialog box is not present. How would I search for that?

Thanks
