Xgen Interactive Groom vertex color and exporting

I have created a groom for my character using the Interactive Groom tools and plugged in a texture map to color the fur. This all works as expected. Now, what I want to do - in a nutshell, to export my groom as polygons WITH the color information to 3rd party package that supports, for example vertex color information. Is there a way to do this? I've tried transferring attributes to get the color information to my converted polygon groom but it doesn't seem to work. How can I go about doing this?
