UV set texture assignment...

Surely I'm doing this wrong:

So I have a model.  Checker Texture applied.  I make a new UV Set.  I alter the UV's in that new set.  I switch the uv set on the model and nothing changes.  After banging my head a bit, I open the Relationship Editor to Texture-Centric UV linking.  I connect the checker texture to the new UV map and VOILA!  It works as expected.

But I cannot assign the same texture to multiple UV Sets?

And why do I have to do the extra step of linking them in the first place?

Yeah, I KNOW I'm doing this wrong.  No way that is the workflow, right?

I'm using Maya 2017 Update 4, if it matters.  Which it shouldn't.

Hi!

1. You can have multiple UV Sets on one model so what do you mean with "I switch the uv set on the model" ?

2. "But I cannot assign the same texture to multiple UV Sets?"

Yes, you can, but only one UV Set per mapped Attribute (like "Color") is possible.

Connect the same texture to an other Attribute (like "Incandescene") and you can assign it to a different UV Set for this Attribute.

Ah, I have misunderstood how to use the UV Sets.  This clears it up.  I was treating it as if only one UV set could be "active" on an object instead of the UV sets being connected to different shader channels.  Makes sense now.
