Something wrong with the material.

Hi every body!

I´m new at Maya and I staring to learn, but I´ve got a problem. I´m a medical doctor and a use Maya to manipulate CT-scans. I´m on the MAC platform so I use OSIRIX to transform the DICOM stacks to a giant polygon. I use *.obj format. When I import the 66Mb *.obj file into Maya every thing looks fine. But when I turn on the "Smooth shade all" the surface on my polygon turns to look like a military jacket. Then I get angry and turn "shade all flat" and everything looks fine. I mean one color, for exampel gray. I´ve tried to assigned new material like Pong and lambert but nothing works. I even tried to manipulate "base" material but it still looks like military when I render the polygon.

Q1 Can I force Maya to throw away the material?

Regards

hi per,

i think you should try something like normals > conform or set to face. sounds like a normal problem. or you have to less polygons for a good smooth display! can you maybe attach a screenshot?

@jhake: wrong place here!!

yes, just select your object and right click over it and assign new material.....what type of graphics card do you have? is it qualified hardware? Sounds like a very heavy polygon. can you post a pic? is it in pieces or just one object? if you show normals do they stick out ward or point inward or are they mixed?

A lot of times when you bring in obj-files you first have to unlock the normals. (Normals > Unlock or in previous versions Edit Polygons/Mesh > Normals > Set vertex normal > Unlock)
Then just select your mesh and soften all normals (Normals > Soften or in previous versions Edit Polygons/Mesh > Normals > Soften /Harden > All Soft)

It might also be that you don't have a good topology. Try running the Cleanup command (Mesh > Cleanup...) and look for " Non manifold geometry, Lamina faces, Faces with zero geometry area and Edges with zero length)

Yes there it was. I solved it. Thanks for your time and creativ thinking. But there were something else that I did. I just added som more? polygons to my gigant polygon. And bye, bye. Smooth.
