Somebody help me understanding the 0 to 1 space in Maya (UV)

So im trying to texture an object what i created in maya. I made textures for it in Substance Designer, but if i scale my UV-s into the 0-1 space as i should then the created textures are too large and if i scale my UVS its going out of the 0 to 1 space. Sorry if its messy. So what should i do to scale my UV-s to fit my textures and at the same time not scaling out from the 0-1?

 

One of my created texture is a cross walk. If i scale it to te 0-1 then the cross walk section is too large for that poly where i want to place it.

Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

 

Good question as this thew me off as well when I was first learning how to texture.

 

Basically, the 0 to 1 space is only important to follow if you are baking normals.

 

So if you have a prop like a barrel for example with a high and low poly that you are going to bake to then the UVs must stay inside the 0 to 1 space.

 

However if you are texturing a brick wall or a cross walk like you side that isn't going to have baked normals then you can stretch the UVs outside of the 0 to 1 space but just be careful you don't distort the UVs too much and get stretching in the texture.

 

Aside from this, you could also simply make the texture tile more in Substance before exporting or if you're exporting to a game engine like Unity or UE4 you can actually make the texture tile in the material shaders in engine so they will look normal.

Yes, thank you ! 🙂 I was able to scale it the way i wanted it in Maya, but after your suggestion i looked it up how is it in UE4 and its not a hard maneuver.
