Referenced model is green

I'm rigging a character so I referenced the character model into a new scene file to do the rig and later on reference the rig into a new scene to animate. I just finished the rig so I decided to go back and add some textures to the character model file, but when I go back to the rig file the mesh is green. The texture is connected to the character and everything seems fine but no matter what I do the character stays green. I can't even assign a different shader. This is my first time using reference files so I'm sure I did something wrong. I would appreciate some help! Thank you

Won't be easy to tell without seeing the file/s, warnings. However, the green color usually indicates that the object has lost its links to the shader, which is quite prone to happen, when having per-face material assignment. If it is your case, fix the issue in the source file, like, split the mesh for each shader, or at least make selection sets for easier connection restoration.

References are tricky, as those come in locked. It is weird you are not able to assign new material - you should at least see some warnings in the script editor, that might hint you to where the problem is.

Also, try using MB format for the main scene with references, as it is less likely to lose some connections, whereas the Reference source files can be MA, which is editable format.

I'm having the same issue. I'm using the referenced model in advanced skeleton.
In the model file the object has texture and is not green.
But in the scene file this referenced object is green. I'm fighting with this issue for a long time and can not fix this.

I started creating everything from all over the beginning but in some moment it became green again, and again.
It is crazy.
How to fix this problem?

Hey! I got the same problem where some objects turned green (not all with that material) and changing the name of the problematic objects worked wonders. (I tried making a new test object with the same material and it looked great in the rig-file with the reference. Changed the name as it was for the old object and it turned green again in the rig-file. Changed the name in the referenced file and voila! So maybe it's enough to just change the name of the problematic objects.)
