Multiple materials on one mesh (how it works)?

Hi,

I'm having quite a trouble to understand how multiple materials on one mesh works in Maya. I come from Softimage and there it was very clear and simple, cluster were used to define the location for different materials and managing clusters was the way to manage materials assigned to them. In Maya this seems to bet somehow different.

Best explanation I found how they work underneath so far tells this:

"Shaders don't have to be assigned to an entire object - they can be assigned to individual faces on an object. For this to work, instead of connecting a shading group to an entire model, it will create a subgroup Id it can use to connect the shading group from an array to the faces. But, unlike in the standard example, the shading group will need to send the color information back to the model for shading that particular region."

(I can follow it quite well until the last sentence, sending back the color information to the model....)

But what it exactly means, how do I manage material associations after the first assignment is done?

How do I  add or subtract polygons from materials later? Just selecting the faces and assigning again? It seems to work, but for example when I want to remove multiple materials, by selecting the mesh and assigning new material, then under the hood the mesh shape still has two shading groups assigned? Do I have to manually disconnect it from Node Editor?

I'm concerned about it because I have some issues with render layer overrides and some of the objects (with multiple objects) do not get overwritten by material override (2017 ext 3).

At the same time, when I create new object, assign two materials to it, then it will get overwritten...I'm very confused...

If anyone could explain the multiple material logic and good habits (especially considering overrides), then I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

See if this tutorial video can help or not. It is applying multiple material into one object using Arnold renderer with Maya.
