Maya 2017 Update 3 - Can't render frame sequence. "rsm" error?

I have a scene that I need to be able to render.

Its using the Render Setup system and has several layers. I can't render it anymore. I think this might have coincided with updating to maya 2017 update 3, but I cant be 100% sure, but it did used to work & I can't think what else changed.

Whenever I try to render the sequence ( Rendering>Render>Render Sequence ) I get the following error:

Starting Render Sequence with Arnold Renderer
# Error: file: C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2017/scripts/others/renderSequence.mel line 158: NameError: file <maya console> line 1: name 'rsm' is not defined #
// Warning: file: C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2017/scripts/others/renderSequence.mel line 160: Cannot render 'rs_UTIL' because we cannot switch to that layer. //
# Error: file: C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2017/scripts/others/renderSequence.mel line 158: NameError: file <maya console> line 1: name 'rsm' is not defined #
// Warning: file: C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2017/scripts/others/renderSequence.mel line 160: Cannot render 'rs_OOZE' because we cannot switch to that layer. //

Sequence rendering completed

It says completed, but actually hasn't done anything.

Is there anything I can do to fix this - it kind of makes it impossible to render this sequence.

Thanks for any advice

I want to thank you very much for your informative post and for all the information you have sent along. After further investigation I've discovered that this actually is a known issue in our issue tracking system. What I'm going to do is attach this thread to the issue case in our tracking system for further review.

I don't have a timeline for when this will have a fix but I'll update when I know more. For now I suggest keeping an eye on the Updates and check the release notes.

A possible work around for now would be to use the Legacy Render Layers.

Windows > Settings/Preferences > Preferences > Rendering > Change the Preferred Render Setup System drop down to > Legacy Render Layers and then restart Maya.

I apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you again for your patience and understanding.

Greetings Y'all.

I have the same issue currently as fireproof02.

I have tried using the LEGACY RENDER SYSTEM but that actually wiped out all the settings and setup that I had initially done in the RENDER SETUP SYSTEM.

Is there a way to retain the settings and setup from the RENDER SETUP SYSTEM then to the LEGACY RENDER SYSTEM as I am forced to render each layer one by one at the moment while in the RENDER SETUP SYSTEM.

I have recently installed the latest UPDATE-04 and that doesn't seem to have solved the issue.

Any chance there may be an update on this?

Thanks.

Apologies.

It seems to be working now. I hadn't set it up properly.

Thanks again in advance.

Hi There

Is this still not solved??

I have the issue here (update3)

is the fix in update 4 or is it not save to install update 4 at all? (has someone tested it)

It difficult to work in a production with unreliable updates 😞

Thank you for information

Greetings pixelmolkerei.

To be honest, I am not quite sure as to whether the UPDATE-04 fixed the issue. It very well may have.

These are the actions that I took recently that seem to have fixed the issue.

1. Installed the latest UPDATE-04

2  Updated Arnold to the latest version MtoA-2.0.0.1-2017.

3. I used a MEL Command from the following website :

 http://mayastation.typepad.com/maya-station/2009/12/connection-errors-when-switching-render-layers.h...

Those are the steps I took and it seems to have solved the issue as I am now able to render layers in sequence using the RENDER SEQUENCE with the ALL LAYERS option ON.

The only thing is that I have to specify the camera again in the RENDER VIEW even though it has already been selected in the RENDER SETTINGS.

I hope this helps.

Just wanna tell that we have got this issue, too. Here is our software spec:

  • Win10 x64
  • Maya 2017 Update 4
  • MtoA-2.0.0.1

In Render Setup, if you create multiple render layers by doing "copy and paste", and if you've done some overrides, such as primary visibility, you'll get "rsm" error when doing "Render Sequence".
