Materials not applying to selected faces and instead applying randomly

Hi there,

I'm not sure if this is an issue with my model or how I'm applying the material, but basically I created a pretty basic model (everything is combined through mesh unions). I'm now applying  materials but for some reason whenever I try to apply the standard surface material I created it doesn't apply to the faces I selected and instead applies random all over the object. It's almost as if some sort of jitter/jumble setting is on but I don't think I clicked anything like that (at least not on purpose). Has anyone seen this behavior before and know if maybe I accidentally turned on a setting or if maybe the way my model was made is causing this jumble?

I tried to reproduce the problem and here the material applied correctly at first but then when I tried to apply a new standard surface material it jumbled again.

Then here when I tried to just apply the existing material to a selection of faces it would start to jumble too, so I'm not quite sure what is happening.

I'm very new to Maya so any help is appreciated! Thank you 🙂

Have you tried to delete the history?

Or export and import the object as obj. That does fix a lot of issues.

Deleting the history worked! I didn't realize with union-ing shapes and adding deformers was complex enough I'd get into having to delete history. Thanks for the advice. Glad I learned this lesson before I got into even more complex things! 🙂
