Japanese Ink style texture

Hello, I am a student starting my FMP and wanted to ask if it is possible to create a traditional Japanese ink style in 3D, I'm fine with the modelling side of things but unsure on how to create this style of texturing or if it is even possible, would toon shaders in Maya work? Any help is appreciated.

See the Arnold gallery for toonshader, or search the web for more examples.

Talking beyond the toonshader, notice in the ink/water-color artwork there are many uneven and soft lines, which would be hard to model, unless you go for 2D cutout style, where you can have RGBA texture with real soft brushstrokes. And then, isn't it easier to do something like this in some compositing software, like After Effects with DuIK rigging plugin?

Otherwise, you can do models, rigs, animation in 3D, rough shapes, caring little about the edges, and render out EXR with depth, normals and UV channels. In the compositing software then you can make jagged contours, apply textures, stylize fills, blur and distort. It will give much more control over the pixels.
