Is the opacity in aistandardsurface raytraced?

I am thinking of using the opacity as a cutout map for leaves and hair. Im just afraid it is using raytrace like transimssion is cuz it'll be a huge problem when rendering. Can someone confirm to me that it is or isn't raytrace base?
I did try to decrease the ray depth in render settings. Its the "transparency depth" not part of the transmission depth? because when I turn the total ray depth to 10 it still render out transparent when I have opacity activate. But If I turn off transparency depth it will not render. I still dont understand if opacity will cost me render time.
