Image background problem: Maya 2017 (Arnold)

Hello to everybody,

I'm new in the Maya world (I used Blender until now) so I'm sorry for the basic question I will discuss now.

I have drawn a temple and I put it on a plane. Using the new Arnold menu in Maya 2017, I have checked that without light the render was completely black. Then I have created a Skydome Light using the same menu: [Arnold]>[Lights]>[Skydome Light]. Now the temple is visible! In the [Color] settings of the Skydome I have selected an external image file to try it as a background.

Within the [Windows]>[Rendering editors]>[Render Settings] menu, I have selected [Arnold renderer]>[Background]>[Create Sky Shader] and the previous sphere with my image has become more White (as watermark color). Now I have tried to keep the Sky Shader and reduce his dimensions but it is locked.

I can't move the Sky Shader as in the YouTube Maya tutorial video (9 min 48 sec): [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rk1dop1SyFo]

I have tried to turn off "Visible in Diffuse", "Visible in Glossy" and "Reflections" for the Sky Shader as someone of you suggested in one of the last topic on "Shading, Lighting and rendering" section of the Maya Forum.

I'm not able to create a background with an image using Maya and the Arnold renderer.

Could you please help me to solve this problem? I'm very grateful to you for your help!

HI everybody,

I solved the problem by inserting the background on the Sky Shader keeping the Sky Domelight without image file as Color Input.

I insert the HyperShade scheme used to solve the problem (maybe this can be helpful for others). I know that the question was simple but these are my first steps in Maya + Arnold.

This didn't solve the exact problem I have, but this was a really helpful follow up to your original question. As a regular on the forums looking for solutions to the newbie mistakes I'm making, it was really great to see someone figure out their issue and then post a thoughtful followup. Thank you. 🙂
