Help - Render 'unsmooth' or 'low-poly' models

Hello everybody,

I'm a student working with Maya and I can't seem to find a solution to this. I'm trying to render out my models exactly as they appear in the unsmoothed preview (i.e. in this mode, a cube with only one face on each side would still look like a cube, rather than a sphere). Think old PS1/PS2 era game graphics, like Lara Croft. I can't seem to find a way to do this in an efficient way.

I have seen some people suggest adding edge loops at every corner. This of course won't work very well as it makes the model impossible to work with if I want to change anything, it creates additional faces for no good reason, it doesn't work properly on complex shapes, and to top it all off it doesn't actually create genuine sharp edges.

The only thing I can think of is that there must be some kind of way to alter the render engine in order to prevent it from smoothing objects. Would anybody have any simple suggestions that would help with this? Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Don't smooth your mesh. Don't hit the 3 key before you render and don't use sub division in your attributes of the shape node (set in to none).

Perfect, exactly what I was looking for! Can't believe it was so simple. Thank you 🙂
