autodesk has a podcast of something similar using the mia_portal_light shader....in mental ray...and it is very easy.....
1. given an enclosed room with a window, place an area light covering your window.
1a. you can also setup an Environment >Physical Sun and Sky to light the exterior.
2. access the attribute editor for the area light and open the mental ray tab.
3. enable Use Light Shape and make sure Visible is on.
4. go down to Custom Shaders and click on the Light Shader map button on the far right.
5. select the Mia_portal_light on the mental ray tab>MentalRay Lights.
6. add the same shader created above to the Photon Emitter slot.
7. in the attribute editor for the portal light shader increase Intensity Multiplier to 100 or so.

it will get you moving in the right direction....you did say you were new to mr didn't you?

I have done as you said and have made the area light and accessed its attributes (as you can see). I have included an image of the mental ray tab, which of these settings am I supposed to use? Also is the environment menu at the top and which set will I find it under (i.e. animation, rendering) as I cant see it.

Thank you!!

I have a quick question on the Portal Light. If I turn Visibility on the portal light blocks the view outside the window from in the room. I understand that turning visibility on 'blocks' Final Gather from having to perform unnecessary calculations but how do you still achieve this without obscuring the vew outside.

Hope that makes sense

Hello
In 7 you can use a point light and convert to a mental ray area light with a square projection.
To simulate the light coming from the sky, plug a mib_cie_d shader to the light color.

Do you know how to hook up geometry to the area light after setting the Light Shape to "User"?

I tried the nurbsSurfaceShape.message to areaLight1.object .... doesn't seem to work.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.
