Directional light not working

Ok I have tried googlig this one and I cant find anything, also I am not sure waht to search for.

I have been following a rendering tutorial from Digital Tutors and for some reason theirs works and mine doesn't.

I have a directional light through the windows and then a area light in front of window which does not emit light but emits photons.

As soon as I place the area light, it stops my directional light and doesn't work by lightign the entire room in a blotchy fashion like the tutorial video.
Even if I remove the area light the directional light doesnt work...

I tried messing around with soem settings but no luck.

If anyone can give me a pointer it would be much appreciated.

Please view the top row of icons on your VIEWPORT and ensure all appropriate settings are switched to ON:

view Lighting, Shadows, Ambient Occlusion, Multisample Anti-aliasing, et cetera
