Colour Variation Across Geometry

So essentially I'm trying to implement a series of colour variation across multiple pieces of geometry using a material.

But found that it didn't work.
If anyone has any ideas, please let me know!
Eventually I will be implementing this via Python code in Maya by the way, in case this makes a difference.
